Default Question on Hiring

I'm just curious and interested in hearing the feedback...Do most of the airlines have a particular preference on who theyd like to hire? For instance do you believe that qualified candidates from lets say COLGAN or GREAT LAKES, CONTINENTAL EXPRESS ETC. would be taken in by Alaska Airlines or any other airline out there? Basically what I'm getting at is, does it really matter what school or airline you work for to build up your time? Do the airlines single out certain schools etc. I hear alot of pilots recommending UND but not everyone can attend school there I would think that it's all just based on your time right? I'm just beginning my flight training and I'm just trying to get the jist of what's going on and who when I get to that point I should try to get picked up by to build my time and potentially have my career with a major carrier.

The reason for this question is because I have gotten mixed responses while working here in Seattle on the ramp. Pilots have told me that great lakes is known as great mistakes etc. no good equipment etc. Any feedback would be appreciated. I'm trying to increase my knowledge and have a better understanding of what's going on out there in aviation.
