So we are to a point that we (as a society) are willfully destroying property, and breaking federal law, because we can't sit by someone on an airplane? What is wrong with people

I'll offer a bit of dissent...
I'm not by any means condoning the destruction of someone else's property, but there's likely to be more to this. Had he reserved adjacent seats? Was his mother elderly or perhaps had a special need? Did JBU offer any compensation, or a refund, or anything, for the customer's lack of satisfaction?

Most of us contemplate civilization as something that always continues in an upward arc. History points out the folly of this notion and makes it clear that we are not always advancing, in fact there are lengthy periods of retracement.
Many lessons must be learned over and over again and some seem never to be learned at all.

We have to be able to control our impulses to a greater degree.

Bingo. There are parameters that we MUST operate within, and federal laws exist so that we do not stray outside of established parameters. Laws are designed and exist to curtail rebellion within society, not to be rebelled against.

This issue, or at least my post about it, isn't whether there was an issue that didn't allow this passenger to sit next to his mother, but rather his REACTION to it.
You can't just go beating against aircraft windows because of seating assignments. It doesn't matter if he was beating on windows or the person sitting next to him. People need to control themselves.
