Default Thoughts on "Chuck Yeager" wannabees...

You know what I am talking about, the guy that has worn a bomber jacket & aviators shades since ground school. The guy who always has the cool, and no matter what you have been through, he has been through worse. When I hear one of these guys, I am reminded of the guys that wear Navy SEALS shirts, despite never having been in the military.

Don't get me wrong, I have a set of wire framed raybans and they feel great under a headset. Someday I will probably break down and get a nice bomber style waist jacket. But I hope I never develop the arrogant and sometimes unsafe attitude that I am THE BEST STICK ANYWHERE.

This is something that has bothered me for years. In your guys experience, are these guys normal when you get higher up in the airline food chain? Or have they been weeded out? When you fly with them, how are their skills on average?

BTW, I don't mean to ruffle anybodys feathers, but it is a valid question.

You get enough hours, you get humbled. I don't know many guys like that who stay like that.

I've noticed this too. It doesn't bother me. I've seen guys wear flights suits when flying a C-152. I have a military old style brown WWII flying jacket and I've never been in the military. I don't pretend to be. Besides the jacket was a gift. When I'm cold, I wear a jacket. When the sun is in my eyes, I wear sunglasses. Yes, they are Raybans. I do have a non-aviation jacket and non Rayban sunglass that I also wear at times. I don't care if people who wear this stuff are pilots or not.

Many pilots and student pilots go through a phase of "acting and/or looking like a pilot". It's harmless most of the time.

If they only knew how much the rest of us laugh, they'd stop really fast.

Reminds me of the quote. "There are old pilots and there are bold pilots. There are no old bold pilots".

I was reminded of a different quote:

"People who act like they know everything are really annoying to those of us who actually do."

Some of those astronauts are pretty bold. Armstrong comes to mind. Ever seen the vids of him in the aircraft testing days. I have a great deal of respect for those guys.
