The Wrights extorted the claim with the Smithsonian; they made consignment of the Wright Flyer to the Smithsonian conditional on the Smithsonian supporting their claim of first.

The Wrights had the Flyer in England, where they were supported, as Smithsonian/Langley and supporters in the USA claimed that his unsuccessful "Aerodrome" boat-anchor/so-called flying machine was the first viable aircraft.
Once these people had retired/left and the Smithsonian accepted the Wrights as the first viable aircraft, they then desired to display it, and the Flyer was brought home from England.
