B747-400 slides off runway in India
Air India Plane Skids Off Runway; Mumbai Airport Shut Again
July 30 (Bloomberg) -- An Air India Boeing Co. 747-400 plane skid off the runway at Mumbai airport with 333 passengers on board, all of whom are safe.
Mumbai airport was shut again this morning because the plane is blocking the runway after a two-day closure was lifted on July 28 following record rains that led to floods. Flight AI 127 had flown in from the southern city of Bangalore and went off the runway while landing in heavy rain at 6:55 a.m., Air India spokesman Jitender Bhargava, said in a phone interview.
``All passengers are safe and have been evacuated from the plane,'' Bhargava said. ``Engineers are working to tow the plane so that we can clear the runway and the tarmac.''
The airport has been closed because the Air India plane is blocking the runway, said Ashok Sharma, spokesman for Indian Airlines Ltd.
Jet Airways (India) Ltd. and Indian Airlines, the country's biggest domestic airlines, and other carriers had resumed flights from Mumbai on July 28.
Mumbai, India's financial capital, was paralyzed for two days because rains shut down the train system and disrupted power supply and telecommunication links.
