If an asteroid ever becomes and imminent threat, it is going to be the military/space super powers of the world who will be doing something about it.

Probably the U.S, Britain, France, Japan, Russia, and maybe China. I see the five permenent members of the UN security council, and that is about it. I would leave it up to these countries, not the entire UN.

Yeah, this would probably be a good investment in the future. It always seemed like science fiction until that one hit jupiter a few years ago...

If you don't think asteroid defense is a real issue, take a look at this picture. The bright spot (the impact site) is larger than the planet earth

I DO think it's a valid issue. We can fight, carry on, and destroy the environment all we want, but one big rock can pulverize us into space dust.
