Default Air National Guard

I would like to know some information on the air national guard. I'm a college grad with my comm multi instrument 420/14. How much of a commitment do I have to make? what kind of training do I have to do? Is there any guarantee i will get turbine time or even a pilot position for that matter? My ultimate goad is to fly for Fed Ex I would appreciate some advice from you guys.

I'm a Guard guy and can tell you it's the best kept secret in America and will be one of the best things you can ever do with your life. It will open more doors and give you multiple opportunities you may never have. Commitment wise, plan on a full 2 years once you get your schooling dates to get trained, qualified, and up to speed. All we fly are turbine aircraft and most, if not all, units hire pilots specifically for pilot positions, you don't go to the recruiter like mechanics, cooks, infantry, etc. do, you go straight to the pilots and they do the hiring. There is tons of info out there on Guard, it's never to early to look into it, best of luck.

I think the age limit is 30 and the only real quals are a 4 year degree, good AFOQT (SAT's for officer school) scores, and a good interview. If you want to be a pilot, then having some ratings and flight time will only help your chances. Think about it, THEY PAY YOU good money to go get trained on an F-16, KC-135, C-17, etc., then pay you even more to fly it on your days off.

That is, if you far enough in the good ole' boys club to get hired. Most ANG units that I interviewed with wanted to see some time at the unit prior to applying. That way, they at least knew that there was a commitment to something other than flying. There are always exceptions.

CH-47 driver, my unit is not that way, but alot are. If you are applying to the NY guard, you should have some connection to the unit or the state, being from AK doesn't give you much sway, that's how most places are. We have hired plenty of off the street guys, myself included, with no commitment, and no we weren't hurting for people, we just hire who we think is going to be a good fit. BUT, if you are in a unit already, you get MAJOR LEAGUE bonus points, my unit included...

Right. I suppose that was the point I was making. You 135 guys are tough pilots, I tell you what. Is it true that your in-cabin heating system sucks that bad?

Yes, our ACM's leave alot to be desired, you can usually have a comfortable temp in the cockpit but that's at the expense of the back half (even with no pax, the boom operators like the back half hot as h&ll so some of that heat gets down into the boom pod for their air refueling). It's a funny system, honestly, the temp. at the ceiling could be 110F and on the floor 35F in the exact same spot, honest to God! Worst part, can't use the ACM on the ground and boy does that suck in the desert/Guam/FL in the summer, etc.

Took a 135 (AZANG) from Andrews to Hickam...guys sleeping on the cargo were sweating with their BDU tops off, and my water bottle froze on the ground.

Not cool.

Granted is was built in 1950 to dump 150,000lbs. of jet fuel into a B-52 not to carry pax but it is kind of a ridiculous system. Gotta love those 11,000 mile legs where no one is comfortable!
