For some who may be facing the posibility of losing their job, there is a career option that might be worth looking into.
I used to fly B732 for and airline in Africa where i'm from but returned to the US where my wife from due to tensions in my country.
Since i had only flown the B732 for a year after flight school i only had 800TT. So instead of applying to a regioal my father in law told me about Refinery Operator postions at BP.
Its a pretty good entry level position.
It starts with 3 moths of ground school covering fundametals of refining.
Step 2 assigned to a unit ie Ultra low sulfur Diesel production, Reformer, Hydrocracker, Hydrogen production, Crude unit etc.
I'm in Utilites. we have 4 duty station
step 3 training in each unit takes about a year to be able to contribute to the operations of the systems.
My flying experince on the 737 was an awesome challange but the the amount of stuff you have to learn as an operator is quite overwhelming.
I've pasted picures of a typical outside duty station and a central control board.Operators carry out planned and emergency unit shutdown, equipment preparation for maintenance crews-ZERO MEchanical STATE.Kinda like taxiing and aircraft into the hanger, shutting it down, diconnecting all power connection that could potentially cause inury to repair crews. In aviation though manitenance guys do all the stuff.
It pays very well.My first year i made $65000, second year now at year end i'll be around $72000. Future postions open to operators include Process saftey management-writing procedures and updating manuals, Special projects coordinator;projects can last as long as 5 years. Your eanings at start of project are increased by ten percent and flexible work hours offered. The negatives about being a refinery operator; you work 12hr shifts nights and weekends and long turnarounds. But you are home at the end of a work day. I work with a few pilots who are now doing various things in the refinery. It might be a good job while waitng to go back to flying.
Apologize for the long thread, hope it helps.
