Have been scanning USAJOBS.GOV religiously past 2 months as I am about to go on Terminal LV and with today's volatile commercial jobs market, am sold on the security of Uncle Sam's cape. Unfortunately, I have yet to come across a Govt job I qualify for. Look forward to any info you may be able to pass along USMCFlyer.

Thanks for looking out for those of us still in the hunt...

Thanks for looking out for those of us still in the hunt...

I was the one doing the hunting not too long ago so I know the feeling KODI3. What qualifications are you missing though coming out of the military that you feel are holding you back?

As far as checking out USAJOBS - there is a way to set it up so that you are e-mailed announcements which fit your criteria which helps with the work load of ahving to scan through pages of commissary jobs every day. For trhe MOST part I was told that the announcements for the job I was interested in hit the web/employment sites on Mondays, but this was NOT true when the acutal announcement I applied for came out on a Wednesday and I was lucky to have seen it, especially since the application window was only open for ONE WEEK and I was on a detachment at the time.

There are numerous different flying jobs out there in the gov't sector though to include the CBP (the guys I know doing this really enjoy the work), JPATS (haven't had the chance to personally meet anyone doing this yet), FAA's corporate side (Hangar 6 - I know one guy that just got on with them from the outside), FAA OT&E (not required to have any type of TPS background and again I know one who recently got this job form the outside at KACY), the Flight check job of course which this thread has awealth of information, and all of the other agencies like Fish and Wildlife, Forestry Service, etc....

Good luck in the hunt.

Nothing really new here in the Panel interview or the Technical Oral portion of the interview process. I posted this much after my interview, but I thought I would reiterate it at this point in the thread to simplify the searching for information part.

Panel questions:
Tell us about your flight experience/background.
The job involves travel, are you willing and able?
What does CRM mean to you?
Tell us about a hard decision you had to make and what you learned.
You are the copilot, your pilot descends below MDA with no field in sight, says he has done this approach many times and not to worry, what do you do?
Your PIC shows up in the morning with the smell of alcohol on his breath, what do you do?
What busy airspace have you flown in?
Have you ever been investigated, part of an accident, stuff like that?
Why are you right for the job?
Are you willing to take responsibility for taking down a NAVAID?

Oral questions:
Lost comms, IFR, VFR.
How long a class 1 is good for?
VFR sectional, altitudes, airspeeds, who do I have to talk to and where.
MOA, can I operate at X altitude, reference the legend.
Restricted airspace, can I fly through, VFR, IFR.
Fuel requirements (IFR, VFR flight planning)
WX mins.
How long to notify FAA if I change address?
VFR cloud clearances?
Airport symbols, reference legend?
IFR charts, symbols, distances, changeover points?
Approach plate diagrams, displaced threshold, step down fixes, holding airspeeds, approach catergories, circling, approach lighting, etc.....
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the tip. Will have to try and figure out the settings on USAjobs. That would be alot easier to filter through. I've got >6,000hrs TT/>3,900hrs PIC all mil turboprop. It appeared a majority of jobs I saw wanted jet time. Maybe I am looking in the wrong section. Interested in CBP, but I heard they have an age limit of 37 which I exceed by 10yrs.

No, no, no! :)

As far as CBP - check out this thread. It is long because it has A LOT of information. The 37 year old restriction doesn't apply to military retirees any more.

Jet time for gov't flying jobs?
Many of the ones I listed don't require it.
There is a curent listing for JPATS which seems to require a DC-9 type rating, but I think even that is fairly new and may be targeted to a particular position because I'm pretty sure that they fly a variety of aircraft.
USAJOBS - Search Jobs

Maybe some of the instructor position in the Air National Guard might required a certain type of experience, but I've seen plenty of jobs on there that you would qualify for with your times and experience.

Search Series Number 2181.

USMCFLYR,

I just wanted to say that your willingness to help fellow pilots is refreshing. I've been lingering on these boards for several years and appreciate that you have selflessly dedicated your time and expertise, time and time again, to help educate and inform other members. There are too many angry and vindictive people on these boards and that kind of attitude is a disease in this industry. Keep up the good work!

Thanks guys - I don't see it has being anything special.
I'm sure your training was no different in the USAF, but those who hoarde the gouge and don't share it are domed to a terrible life in Hades :D

This site has been very beneficial to me and gave me lots of contacts which were turned into LORs, resumes being handed to CPs, offers to talk and discuss details of jobs and offers, and even eventually the job that I applied for, and was hired here, at Flight Check.

The current buzz phrase is "pay it forward', but I was taught to give as much as you receive. It would be a GREAT feeling to know that I helped someone get a job somewhere - here at Flight Check or any othr job opportunity I came across.

I hope others on APC will do the same.

+3 squared! Too much negativity on forums. I agree that helping others is good karma "what goes around, comes around.....".
