If you are an XJ furlough this is true, if you are a true "new hire" your DOH will be when you pass your checkride. The only significance you get with the first day of class is a seniority date for seniority purposes. This has been addressed in the seniority section while working towards a JCBA but currently old practice remains.

You won't know until you show up. Worst case you would commute for a few months.
