CommutAir

Haven't seen/heard anything lately about CommutAir. I have an interview coming up soon, and was wondering if anyone here has interviewed recently and might be able to provide some insight as to their experiences, etc.

"OMG! Why would you wanna work there?!" <-- Ok, it's been done. I know the pay sucks, so save those comments for a different thread :)

Cal Varnson 10-14-2010 07:11 PM

What are your times? I had my resume walked in and didn't hear anything from them.

Diver Driver 10-14-2010 07:50 PM

Great group of folks here, everyone is pretty close. The Dash is a fun airplane to fly and we get to use it in some pretty challenging conditions. Upgrade time is running about 3 years right now, but it is looking like that will decrease as attrition has increased recently. They are trying for a new hire class of 8 on the 25th, one upgrade class is in progress and another is planned for next month. 2 guys were just hired today.

I know what everyone says, the pay/work rules are bad, blah.. blah.., but it is what it is. We are working on improving as much of that as we can through our ALPA contract negotiations that are in progress now. The people here really make it worth coming to work. The pay is low, the upgrade is pretty quick and you get some good experience. I actually like it here and look forward to hopefully upgrading in the next couple of years.

From what I'm hearing, interviews are mirroring the gouges on willflyforfood.cc. Study up and you'll be fine. Good luck!

My times are around 1600/380. Had it walked in about 3 weeks ago or so and just heard back this past week. I know someone who interned there about a year ago and they said they really liked the company, so I am looking forward to it. Hopefully the pay situation will get better with time...

dashtrash300 10-15-2010 05:35 PM

How are those 300's coming? I interviewed a while ago and got placed in the pool. They offered me 3 classes but I turned them all down because I had gotten recalled from my other airline. I remember they were saying the 300's were just around the corner which is why they were trying to fill a pool of 150+ pilots. They said if I wanted back in to just let them know and I would have to reinterview. Does CommutAir have any upgrade requirements such as a total time requirement?

That's when I had mine walked in, too. Oh well. Good luck!

I've got a little F16 time, and Saab and CRJ time. Former Captain for Southwest. Can I get a job there?

RJ Pilot 10-16-2010 05:18 AM

Say hello to TM.

Just be honest....you got his signature right? I would of thought that would be a red flag in hiring him and against the law to lie on applications.

Random question(s)... how does parking work?

Example one: your base is EWR, can you park there free?

Example two: your base is EWR, you commute from another airport... can you park at the airport from which you are commuting for free?

Appreciate your responses!

You should get him to sign a poster of the space shuttle for you

Parking is paid at either crew base of your choice (CLE or EWR). If you commute from another city that's not a CommutAir base, you are responsible for any parking fees at that airport.

Ah ok, that's what I suspected. Some airlines do though, right? Just wondering as per future ideas :-)

Yes, some airlines do. They'll usually pay up to the cost of parking for your base toward your commuter parking if you want instead of getting a base pass.

No more classes for 2010, hoping for Jan 2011
Interview is pretty much straight from the gouge. In and out in roughly 2 hours. Really seems like a great bunch of people to work with. Anyone else interview recently or get a call?

Av8tion 10-31-2010 08:16 AM

I remember getting a phone call from Commutair back in '08 to set up an interview... then the b@$%# never called me back or returned any of my phone calls... I wish they put me in touch with someone competent... maybe I'd be flying with them instead of futilely hunting for another job at a regional...

clipperskipper 10-31-2010 01:06 PM

There's a good read on Commutair over at the ALPA site:“Under CommutAir’s most recent contract offer, a new-hire pilot would make less than $20,000 a year,” Segaloff continued. “Every airline pilot has a stake in what’s happening at this small airline, because if CommutAir is successful in cutting pay when the industry is coming out of its slump, they will lower the bar for regional pilots across the country.”

no.... it didn't.... I got a phone call from them... they left a voicemail... I never so much as talked to them... so I have every right to be ****ed at them... It's all on them... I did absolutely nothing wrong...

ALPA News Release

REALLY?! I was under the impression that contract negotiations were happening and things were supposed to get BETTER, not WORSE! Anyone have any more internal legit info on what's likely to happen here?

Crawl 11-11-2010 07:22 AM

Anyone at CommutAir commute? How difficult is it, and what do you do about parking where you commute from since they don't pay for parking if it's not your base? Hmm... thanks for any info.

I commute, a lot of people commute. I just pay for my parking out of base. My airport is reasonable ($30/mo, unlimited), others aren't so lucky. It just depends on where you live.

You just have to be responsible about commuting, we don't have a commuter protection policy yet... that's tied up in contract negotiations. Our only commuter protection right now is our sick time.

Alright, that sounds pretty reasonable, thanks for the reply!

Just got hired into the pool in late October. Said I should expect a possible Jan 2011 class date since they don't want to start new classes during the holidays. Anyone else hear about classes?

Word around here suggests the possibility of a Jan class. The sims are pretty backed up right now for new hires. I'm sure something will be scheduled soon, we could probably use another class soon.

iflyi1 11-22-2010 06:53 PM

Ok, just got the email tonight! January 10th, 2011 class date.

Don't let anyone tell you differently, the best landings happen at 8.5 degrees. Just remember not to go past that extra 0.5 degree and hit the tail!

Hey, just got an interview at Commut on feb 22. Can't wait but, how would commuting from PHX be? How many days off do you get per month? Any words of wisdom for the interview? Thanks for the info!

Commuting = possible, but would suck.

Days off/month = depends on your seniority, "min" is 9...

Words of wisdom for the interview = read the gouge (it's pretty spot on) and show that you are competent. There is no sim and it's pretty quick compared to most other places. For mine, I was in and out within about 2 hours or so, as opposed to sitting in a holding tank for 1+ day(s)...

jimmyladue 01-26-2011 09:06 AM

Thanks Crawl. Hopfully I'll be flying with you in the near future. I have been flight instructing for four years now, I'm pretty sure it's my turn to get that miserable (so called) right seat.
