Interesting. I interviewed last Nov got hired, was ready to start in Jan, then got an email Dec 31st saying all hiring on hold until further notice, but you are in the pool. Loads of other guys were also in the pool waiting to hear from them. They haven't contacted any of us yet.

They are either married to someone who isn't a controlling sociopath, or quickly divorced.

That is very interesting. I am in sim phase at K4 on the classic and two guys in my class both came over from Southern. One had been there a couple years, the other was in training and left. Seems like they would contact guys like yourself if they were hiring.... if you are still interested might be worth a call to HR.

UnitedFlyier,

Same experience here, except my interview with SAI was in early December. I think the pool had 30-40 at that time. I would expect that several have taken other offers in the meantime.

When asking how the pool process works at that time, I was told by another pilot "After put in pool, you won't receive replies or any info; until the Wednesday, before class starts."

The HR representatives we meet with were extremely kind, and might be able to shed a little more light if asked. Hope things are going well!

All the best,

SP

We were told in recurrent class that there are 20ish in the pool. The pool is re-ranked after every interview group and called accordingly. In the last three months I have flown a total of 45 hrs and deadheaded 55 (june was only training..no trips). Yes, quite a bit of sitting in hotels. While no crews like sitting in the hotel and would rather fly or go home, I think most of us are grateful for having a paycheck in the short term rather than being on the street. With the growth that will be happening early next year, there will be a real need for training. The top end of the company is slowly changing; new people, new ideas, new attitude (my opinion of course). I have only been on property for a year, but I have seen some small changes for the better. The contract is opening in a month, so we are all hopeful.

Chief Pilots/HR have a tendency to lose things - if you were in the pool previously, I'd suggest sending an updated resume and indicate you are still available. If you want the job - bug them (you can always keep your apps in at Atlas!).

Everyone gets typed; but...
Ouch... correct me if I am wrong but am I reading the job listing correctly when it says an IRO only needs 1500TT? Any idea what would be competitive at this point? Thanks Biggie and Rob!
Plan on being SIC typed in the Classic. 1500TT will get you an ATP Type; but, the company GOM requires 2000 hrs Category II PIC time or 1000 hrs PIC/SIC and 500 hrs in type at said company to be a PIC (I thought that requirement used to be in the FARs; but, I can't find it). All IROs (B777) are PIC typed, as to be "in command when the PIC is resting"; so, unless you have GOM mins; don't plan on it. And unless you're already 777 typed; don't plan on being hired into it (for some of the worst wages in the industry!).

As I mentioned previously, the company has the potential to be short pilots soon, due to the 777 transitions (and possibly B747-400s) and pilots departing for greener pastures. While Scheduling has been pretty messed in the past (some crew members sitting for days and only flying 30 hrs, while others were flying 80-90 hrs in 16 days); they won't be able to be FU'ed much longer. Initial new hires can probably count on flying above 60 hrs.

Another big point - company makes you sign a training contract. Supposedly, not enforceable in Conneticut; but, something to consider (actually, some of the newhires that have left for Atlas/Kalitta had signed training contracts).

Questions - Buehler?

Your joking right? I've been there 3.5 years and have never broken guarantee, the schedulers have orders not to let anyone go over guarantee. If they see you getting close they will take away your remaining trips and you'll sit in the hotel until it's time to go home, in short, fuhgetaboutit!!

Interesting that SA on SIC types their classic FOs, K4 is now PIC typing ALL FOs on both the -400 and the classic.

Seventeen is about average. Fewer the last few months.
I break 60 about once every three months.
Only SIC type.
Your wife has to be on board. If she doesn't understand that you're gone, and not coming back for the duration its not going to work out. Skype helps. And being home for 10 (or 20 if you go back-to-back) uninterrupted can be really nice.
As for hotels, I've made Gold at Hilton, Holiday Inn, and Marriott. I sat for 20 days straight in November and December. But usually its not more than 3 nights in a row.
The recruitment process used to be "So and so over here says he knows you... Can you start on Monday? OK, then you're hired." The company seems to be 'professionalizing', and HR appears to be leading the way. I'd expect a standard resume screening, phone interview, followed by an invite to MIA for HR, CP panel, and Sim eval. At least until its Thursday night and they need to fill 5 seats for Monday's class.
