Majors Hiring

If they wait until 2015, they will be so far behind the power curve it will not even be manageable. Again, that would not surprise me in the least. It creates a need that DAL cannot fulfill and as a result they will "need" something. It is also when they probably predict they will reach an agreement with their pilots.

At this moment there are 468 pilots at DAL in the age group of 60-65. 165 this year have accepted early retirement in addition to these 468.
It was one year ago this month that DAL planned expansion the following year by 5-7%...at the moment they're planning a contraction of 2-3% for next year.

I don't blame the BOD for the changes since the economy and oil prices vary so much...plus the company would like a negotiating tool for Contract 2012.

The airline that stays ahead of the training curve will be the big winner. Airplanes don't fly without pilots if pilots are stuck in training and the airline is forced to cancel flights customer loyality will lost. People do not want to book a flight on Airline A if their is a good chance the flight will be cancelled due to a lack of crews. I would hope Delta would be proactive on this or maybe it's cheaper to CX flights due to a lack of crews. The only people that know this are the bean counters. From what I have been hearing most guys want to stay until 61-63. And no airline knows when a guy will finally say enough is enough and retire.

Exactly. You regional guys who are dreaming of a massive hiring spree at the majors in 2012 are going to be hugely disappointed. The retirements at the majors will be mitigated by capacity reduction. Regional pilots that think the majors will hire one pilot for every pilot that retires, are living in a fantasy land.
If I hear one more person tell me "when AA hires"... Your lucky you just have to read it here, and not have to listen to this BS for 4 days.
Pilot shortage... right.

Playing devil's advocate, but throw in capacity reductions, higher oil prices and relaxed scope and hopefully the retirements will prevent some from getting furloughed at the majors.
