Default Spelling 101

FYI, I talked to a friend recently who had spent the better part of his day sorting resumes and lining up future interviews. He shared with me that he had passed on "several" application packages due to basic spelling errors and the way the package was presented. His rationale was that anyone submitting something as important as an airline resume ought to take the time to proof read his/her submissions. On a personal note, I see many posts here that have horrible spelling and grammar. I am far from a perfect speller and don't mean to imply otherwise. I just found it amazing that something as basic as spelling and appearance could make the difference in a job. I would suggest that we all be a little more aware of how we represent ourselves in written form. Apparently, it is important to some! It would suck to lose a job with your "preffered carrier" because of something so silly! Just food for thought.....

I'm pasting a post from the IPA board, I think he nails it:

C'mon....at the very least, if you are using OE/MS Word, turn on the
spell-check feature. If you aren't using OE/Word, Google is your friend.
Find a free spell check add in and use it!

Take a moment and review the difference between "lose", as in "you lose your
keys", and "loose", as in "your tie is loose". Or how about "they're",
(contraction: they are), "their" (poss.: "their house"), and "there", (as in
"over there")?

For a bunch of (allegedly) college educated, highly compensated, type A,
egotistical, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, professionals,
some of the stuff posted here is hilarious in its composition and grammar.

Before you hit the send key, think: spelling, usage, clarity! (A
punctuation review wouldn't hurt, either...)

If you want to be treated like a professional, spell, compose, and enunciate
like one.<g>

If I may add my 2 cents Calcapt...

I admit that I am one of those people that did quite well in my writing and English studies in college, but I did not major in it. I was of that early class of internet folks here in the Bay Area and switched to computer science instead. After all, I am an old gal!

Spelling and grammar may not seem very relevant in the airline/pilot world, but let me give it to you from an HR perspective for ANY industry.

You are the HR lead for your corporation and you get hundreds of resumes and CV's to sort through everyday. You sort through these resumes and you see resumes with atrocious spelling and grammar. You think to yourself, did this person really go to college, and if so, what kind of college would let them commence their studies with that kind of writing? But more important is, I am looking for an employee with an attention to detail, whether it's someone who can file a flight plan, do the math, or whatever it is that you pilots do.

I will not even profess to understand all that pilots do, because I have no idea, but one would imagine that an attention to detail would be high on the list.

I am 45 years old, so I came up through college before there were such things as "spellcheck". But really, in this day and age of spellcheck, if I got a resume from someone who wrote poorly, I would automatically assume that they could care less about attention to "detail"...do you want such a careless person flying you and your family?

Basically, if you don't care enough about how your resume looks, I don't care how damn good of a pilot you may be. You're not showing the attention to detail.

LOL...I could tell you stories about my days in the movie business and the horribly written emails that I got from VIP's...but they're not that exciting.

LOL...I feel like I am the only female on these boards, who butted her way into the "stag" club...good news is, my doc gave me the post-op "ok" to go back to work next week, so ya'all won't have to put up with my femaleness for long....:-)

Fly on!

My spelling was better when I had use of a spell checker for Firefox (my browser). Unfortunately, it stopped working when I upgraded to the latest version. I agree, however, that bad grammar and spelling could be disqualifying. I used to review applications and be on an interview board at a previous airline. I was also amazed at how sloppy some applications were. I never met the applicants.

Someone on the list may be interested in applying for one of the two Part 91 openings a Auburn. These are copilot positions. Upgrade is possible, but there is not much turnover. Age is not a limitation!

The web site is:

https://www.auemployment.com/applica...=1145369154668

Application is online and closes on April 28.

Auburn has a Citation Bravo and Ultra. Destinations are mostly in the S. E. but may be anywhere in the continental US. The flight department consists of six pilots and recent currency is desired, but not required. All training is paid for. Hours vary but will include weekends. Flying during recruiting season is particularly heavy.

Call 334-844-4216 for additional information.
