Horizon files application requesting flights into Mexico
A first: Horizon files application requesting to begin service to Mexico
May 9, 2007
For the first time in its history, Horizon Air is fixing its gaze south of the border. But gazing might be as far as it goes.
On May 8, Horizon submitted an application to the DOT requesting to begin service from Los Angeles to Loreto, Mexico. Alaska Airlines has served Loreto since February 2005, and it currently offers four flights a week. In its application, Horizon stated that the plan is for both airlines combined to provide daily service.
If Horizon’s application is approved, we would launch flights on Oct. 28, making Loreto our first-ever Mexican destination.
“It’s much too early to say ‘ˇArriba!’ Several pieces would have to fall into place for this to become a reality,” says Pat Zachwieja, vice president, Marketing and Planning.
According to U.S. and Mexican regulations, up to three U.S. carriers may be designated to serve certain U.S.-Mexico markets, including Los Angeles-Loreto. Currently, three U.S. carriers, including Alaska, hold designations to serve the route. Having heard that one of those designations is expected to become unused next month, Horizon submitted its application. If other airlines are interested in the route, they might follow suit as well. Horizon’s position should be clearer within 30 days, the time DOT is allotted for an initial response to applications for service.
To fly the route, Horizon would also need to receive approvals from the FAA and its Mexican equivalent, the DGAC.
Founded in 1697 by Jesuit missionaries, Loreto is located on the eastern shore of Baja, on the Sea of Cortez. A town of 10,000, the popular tourist destination is known for its sport fishing, beaches and historical sites.
