I like how when any airline is hiring someone posts it on here within a few minutes it seems but when Horizon is hiring, no body says a word. Horizon's hiring window is open on the website

That is because Horizon is like a roach motel, you check in but you don't check out.

They state in the posting that you will make 28,000/yr it is more like 24000/yr if you are on reserve, which you will be for the first year. Even if you get to hold a line it will be more like 25,500/yr. Since you will not upgrade for 10yrs+ you will never make more than 45,000/yr for the foreseeable future. Plus you might get two pay cuts within your first couple of years if the current TA get voted in. I would stay away from this place, it is career suicide, even if you live in the PacNW.

Good luck too all that apply, you might not be the sharpest tool but, I will welcome you aboard flying Dutchman anyway!

Pigg,

I was under the impression that Horizon was downsizing and more furloughs would result. Instead there is recalls/hiring. Did alot of people resign? What gives??

Pigg, man, i know you hate QX but seriously, no need to be a debbie downer here...this is great news that we're hiring! I know a bunch of guys will be leaving QX in the near future anyways to go to different gigs, which means the seniority list will start moving again. If it really doesn't move in the next 5 years, and I can't get a job at AS with the 70/30 agreement, then I'll move on. Plus, get your facts straight about pay. In the period January 2008 - November 2008 (11 months, 2 of which were training), with year 1 pay, I earned just over $32,000, with 3 reserve bids, 1 composite, and the rest lines. Not too shabby considering the alternative is Colgan, working longer hours, being treated literally like a log in the toilet, and ending up with $16,000. Not to mention commuting across the continent.

If you have a house, wife, and kids, and have food on the table and enough gas in the car to get to the airport, and are able to work 4 on / 3 off...you have it good. You can't look at the DAL captain on the A330 and say "I should be making that much and working that little" in a Q400. That's just my humble opinion.

I like it at QX...I frankly won't care if you're offended when I reach over to your ARCDU and turn off your hotmic :p

Oh yea, and sticking to the original intent of this post:

Brewpilot, your question has been answered. All furloughs have been recalled. The pilots who deny recall will be axed (if no other arrangement exists with CPO). Hence, they are anticipating new hire classes in January 2011, which means they will be interviewing probably in December. Go to Alaska Airlines / Horizon Air, hit the careers link, you can figure out the rest. Good luck! Hope to see you on the line someday

A bunch of people have quit and quite a few did not accept recall, also they need more pilots to create a training bubble. There are 8 CRJ's leaving between Jan 2011 and June 2011 with 8 Q400's coming in to replace them. That will put massive amounts of pilots in transition training to the Q400. They will need bodies in the seats while all of that training takes place. The company has plans to have the remaining 5 CRJ's left gone by the end of 2011, with no replacement Q400's. At that time we will be at 48 Q 400's, about 500+ pilots we are currently about 590 pilots with 53 aircraft. So the company is bulking up with pilots to cover the training, after 2011 I think they are hoping that enough people will leave to the majors or wherever to keep whomever they hire, if not, they will furlough them.

I am using this simple math:

92 min guar * 10 bids/yr * 28 = 25,760 for a line holder.

86.3 min guar * 10 bids/yr * 28 = 24,164 for someone on reserve for the whole year.

Per diem does not count, it is a reimbursement.

They state in the employment posting that the "minimum wage" is 28,000 that just simply is not true.

flyinpigg 11-09-2010 08:39 AM

HAL,

I am glad that you like it at QX, I am happy someone does, but the vast majority of FO's at QX feel this place is career suicide, sure there are some happy campers out there, but they are in the minority. The reality is, if you want to have a career that does not include being a lifer at Horizon, you should go somewhere else, even if you make less in your first year and you have to commute across the the continent. At the end of the day you will have a better chance at career progression by being almost anywhere else.

What's the "70/30" deal with Alaska in this deal?? Preferencial hiring?

The rumor is that our new Pres, Glenn Johnson, has stated that Alaska is going to fill new hire classes with 30% Horizon folks and that has been the unspoken and unwritten rule in the past. I have yet to see that in writing or coming from anyone with any authority to speak to such matters. So a rumor and nothing more, please don't plan your career based on this rumor.

From what I have seen, when Alaska was actively hiring there were many more pilots from Skywest, and other regionals in new hire classes than from Horizon. Now that I really think about it, if the 30% rule is true, and you really want to be an Alaska pilot you would have a much better chance by going elsewhere and getting your PIC time and then applying to Alaska. Plus you could do it much quicker.
