Medford?! half a bottle of Jack D later and I still think this is a joke |
Two of the three cities aren't really that surprising. Boise and Spokane were previously crew bases that were closed down about 10 years ago.

Does Horizon have mx in mfr? Or is there that much service there? Seems like sfo and Pdx are the only cities served. I know slc and den are done by OO, but this seems like a deadhead to/from kind of place. No disrespect to the hippies in south OR...

MFR is anyone's guess at this point...the company says it's because we have 3 RON's there. LAX, PDX and SEA are the morning flights that head out. Personally it seems like a really bad idea, but the company seems hell bent on making this happen...just like our decision to go with EFB's that don't work, Q400's that work part of the time, ECrew that looks like a child designed it...etc, etc, etc |
I can confirm. Just rode the jumpseat with one of the pilots who was on the advisory committee that came up with the plan. Here are the highlights...
1. Surfer Lucas has the numbers right except my source said it was total number of pilots not lines of flying. The system is designed to reduce soft time and eliminate CDOs. There will be limited number of out based reserves, just enough to cover the first flights of the day. Subsequent gaps will be filled by reserve pilots from SEA and PDX. 2. The system is projected to save $7 to 8M a year and upping the QX ROI from 5% to 9%. Considering the Air Group target of 10% ROI that is a huge increase. 3. Super bad news for offline commuters from GEG, BOI and MFD. |

One pilot posted on our internal website that MFR really doens't allow any oppertunities for growth. We are tapped out from there. Now if the company is planning on expanding in CA then MFR really doesn't allow any options. BOI and GEG are mainly 1 or 2 day trips.
I am happy for the BOI and GEG guys that don't have to commute anymore but MFR is not a win for anyone. If SJC or LAX were the 5th domicile then it would offer better commuting options and the CA people will love it. MFR goes below Cat 1 mins alot. SJC would also allow the option of growth if they ever want to do it. The numbers are subject to change because they are still trying to make the right amount of reserves. I see pilot attrition going up and FA attrition to go throug the roof. |
Plus AS just got a SJC-DCA slot and QX mgnt kept saying that if that happened then they need more feed for inter CA.
