Default Horizon reserve

Hi all, new to the forum. I am currently a biz jet guy looking to get into the 121 world. I was wondering what the typical schedule is like on reserve? I would be commuting from smf for awhile. I would be more than willing to stay on longer if it means more days off in a row......ie 4 on 3 off would kinda suck as that would realistically turn into 4 on 2.5 off with the commute, as short as it is. Im hoping i could do something like 5 or 6 on with 4 off? Thanks, any input would be appreciated

I have straight-line reserve next bid, because I'm an idiot and screwed up my bid...

This is what my schedule looks like:

2 on
3 off
4 on
2 off
4 on
3 off
5 on
3 off
4 on
2 off
2 on

13 days off out of a 35 day bid.

All reserve lines are pretty much created equal, except for which days off they have. You're not going to find one that has larger or smaller blocks of days off, as a general rule. Commuting to reserve when you only have 2 days off is the worst thing ever.

The good news is that there has been a lot of movement so time spent on reserve can now be measured in months not years. The bad news is that reserve is not pleasant at Horizon. Reserves get 13 days off every 35 days; They will use you a lot but if they don't expect to get switched from a.m to p.m on your last day.

damn Pete give somebody else a chance

Soooooooo........please excuse my ignorance, as i said im a biz jet guy that works on an 8 on 6 off. I dont understand the bid system. As i understand it the short commute from smf to either pdx or sea would make for a better work schedule while holding a line. What kind of days on days off could you expect then? Im just looking for more than 3 days off in a row.

The bid system works in 5-week periods. Schedules are assembled, and then you place your bid for which one you want. They are awarded in seniority order. I'm usually a pretty junior line holder. This bid, my schedule went like this:

3 on
3 off
4 off
9 off
3 on
4 off
4 on
4 off
2 on

20 days off total.

Thanks Pete, just curious, how long ya think a guy would have to sit reserve in pdx or sea currently?

No real idea. Probably 6 months or so. That's a complete wild guess based on theoretical future hiring.

Yeah. 86.3 or .5... I'd have to look up the decimal...

Keep in mind that's per 35-day bid period, not per month.
