Hey everyone!
quick question.
I have a mentee who lives about an hour from MCO. Currently he is a regional CA( not much for turbine PIC, ex military helo) with one of the wholly owned and has about a year till he flows.
He has asked me numerous times if he should wait for the flow or apply to B6.
Unfortunately I have been on MIL leave for the last 3 years so my info might be a little outdated.
what would you tell him?
TIA!

There are A LOT of AA Wholly Owned pilots leaving the flow for other airlines with a base within short call reserve driving distance. None of them have regretted it.

I wouldn’t even put MCO in the pro column when determining whether to go to Jetblue. Maybe look at the FLL base for Jetblue or MIA for American and compare that. I think it’s about a 3-4 hour drive. If they really want to drive to Orlando and actually have some seniority, I’d look at Spirit or Frontier.

Hard to quantify without knowing their hierarchy of importance. For instance, if they desire to be a wide body captain at some point, well, enjoy the flow! If Orlando is going to be home base forever, welcome to JetBlue. They could always become a school house instructor here and be home almost every night of the year. Different strokes for different folks. It’s always nice to have options, hope they get whatever they desire.

Agree with this.
If your only want is an mco base go to swa, spirit, or frontier.

I second sentiments here. Eliminating your commute is the quickest and most assured way of making money, or having more time off, or both. Where your buddy lives/wants to live/where his mother in law lives is of paramount importance.
Neither carrier is going away in the foreseeable future.
Waiting for a flow that could end in the first downturn is a fool’s game, in any event. With the way that JB brings new hires on, he’ll still have a year and a half to think about it even if he gets hired tomorrow.
