Every year or so there needs to be a lesson. If you get s-hammered on a overnight call in sick. Then go home.

You left out the most important part. As soon as you get home remove yourself from active work status and contact your HIMS coordinator to try and get well. Just calling in sick is simply kicking the can. The problem is it generally takes a major event in a drug addicts life to force them to get help. This pilots career can be salvaged if he is willing to due the work. It would have been easier had he sought help prior or friends had pushed him to get help. It’s not however to late.

Can’t speak to the rules at JB, but at my employer he’d be toast. Once you cross the boarding door threshold impaired that’s it. If the FO knew and boarded the jet while doing/saying nothing then he/she was complicit and they’ve got problems as well.

If everything is true, his career will not be saved. HIMS saves your career, and there's 1,000 hoops you have to go through continuously to do that. Once you operate a plane under the limit, it's over. Maybe you can find some flight instruction or small part 91 place if your certs don't all get revoked and they don't google your name.

Just to clarify, it was the FO that was arrested.

You have major airlines like Delta asking the government to put passengers who don't wear masks properly or give any instance of grief to be placed on a national No Fly List. You also have airlines that seek to recover damages from drunk passengers causing diversions. But apparently intoxicated pilots are ok to be keep employed? Does everyone understand how much hypocrisy is going on? We are supposed to be professionals. Anything short of revoking certificates makes us look like entitled hypocrites. I hope the guy gets the help he needs but his pilot days should be over. You can't even deliver for Amazon or drive an Uber with a DUI. We should be demanding better of each other.

You obviously have never dealt with someone who is truly an alcoholic. Nobody is excusing his behavior and there will and should be consequences. I have known a couple of high functioning alcoholics in my time and often other than them being the “life of the party” at social events the rest of the time they hide it well until it’s side effects starts to interfere with their professional life. Many were considered top performers until their problem got out of control.
