I don’t care how bad the pairings are you don’t commute from LAX to the east coast to avoid them. Only an idiot would do that

Nobody said anything about guys living in LA commuting to NY (although there are some, and some FAs). It’s more guys in places like PHX/LAS/SFO/DEN/SEA/PDX type of places, where LAX is the logical place to commute in theory, but the pairings and QOL in LAX drive them to NY or BOS where it’s better. There were some FAs commuting from HNL to JFK, and there is an FO who commutes from LHR. Not sure they are “idiots” per se. Different strokes for different folks. One FA I talked to lives in LAX, based out of JFK, bids overnights at home. Often commutes in mint in a lie flat. It is a better QOL for her than being on reserve in LAX.

To each their own. Bit harsh there I think.

If you can legally drink on your commute to work, your commute is too long.
(ask me how I know)

I think a contract provision I’d like to see is the inability to schedule a pilot into the redeye period more than twice in a calendar month unless waived.

Well, I am a new hire and got LAX out of training and I am the 2nd most junior in class which explains why I got it.

I do not want to be based there, I live on the east coast and if someone knows how can I get out of there the quickest or how and when can I Base Trade and how likely it would be for me to base trade every month I would appreciate your help very very much.

Thanks.

The problem is that the airline has largely used a high utilization model which necessitates a high amount of red eye flying on the fleet. Go look at the A220, up to 50% of the fleet is heading west every night. If you put stipulations like max 1 red eye per pairing, all the multi day pairing will have a red eye to cover the schedule. If you put no more then 2 red eyes a month, every pilot in the airline is going to fly a red eye twice a month.

That right there is going to push our “industry leading” pairing construction even deeper into the rabbit hole.

To summarize, sometimes good intentions have bad consequences.

You should get your name on the monthly base trade list for October. I think you need to send an email to the LAX base admin between Sept. 7 and Sept. 21. Details are in 24.N of the CBA. Looks like there’s one BOS FO on the list looking to go to LAX, so you may get lucky.
