Jetblue has $17B in total assets but $4B of that is either cash, short term investment or receivables. So really they have about $13B in "Assets" (planes, equipment, etc) They have $8B in long term debt (what we've been talking about) $4.1B in Current Liabilities and another $1.6B in Other Liabilities. $17B of total assets and around $13B of debt load, so they don't really "Own most of their assets outright".
The almost $4B of cash and short term investments is very nice, especially compared to Spirit and Frontier right now. But their retained earnings and shareholder equity is basically the cash and investments. Everything else is basically equal to the debt load, so no actual "paid off assets".
United is roughly in the same boat, just a rapidly improving trajectory is the only difference.

-hand, as a priority at yesterday’s conference. I’d think that until he’s done that, he won’t be taking on billions more in debt.

Taking on debt? The leveraged buyout will fix that!

With multiple conversations going in multiple threads, figured it'd be better to consolidate into a new one. I'd be very interested to see what the financials are for UA to integrate into Paisley. I have to assume they're getting a better deal than what they are currently using, and it's free money for JB.
While it does seem like this is the first phase of that supposed 3 phase plan, I'm not sure JB wants to give up all their other partnerships in order to join Star Alliance in a theoretical phase 2.

until a merger actually happens, none of these CEOs will say they want 1 with a specific airline anyway.

Although to be fair, I do get my "tuning my Miata" info from GunsandAmmo.com

Given the feds interceded when JetBlue tried to merge with NK over concerns that such a merger would result in a monopolistic outcome it’s difficult to believe they would allow an actual JetBlue - United merger. Not impossible I guess (different administration) but seems pretty damn unlikely.

You can start listening at 16:45. Its pretty clear Kirby wants to maximize a relationship with Jetblue without an acquisition. His words are self-explanatory.
At 18:00 she asks "What are your thoughts on the budget airline model?". Very interesting response.
