Thanks Wasp, have you found that the flight followers are well trained and in their efforts to make the machine run, do the right thing? i.e. knowing what’s legal for the pilots and staying within those perimeters?

If you’re asking about Connie's Flight Followers, I don’t work there. Their training depends on the company training program. As Max pointed out in the Supplemental world the crew is much more on their own. In a prior life it was “Here’s your paperwork, call us when you get there. The DO has operational control of the flight but since they’re not in the office 24/7 the Flight Follower is doing the work but if there’s a question it flows up to the DO.

Hey you guys come watch this!!!
Always sucks to feel like your backsides hanging out there with no protection from your pals back in OPS.

I always found it better to first ask for a route offset of Xmiles. If that didn’t work just tell them what you are doing. Not really a big deal.

In China, wx deviation works like this:

Request.
Require.
PanPan.

Simple

^^^This^^^ Worked for me many a time and I’m sure it still works good and will last a long time.

Yep, I had to pull out the “pan pan” card more than a few times during my years in China.

I am on my 3rd ACMI and ACMIs actually do pretty well during economic downturns and rising oil. Although no one is furlough proof, I’ve seen my brothers and sisters at legacies and regionals get furloughed while I remained employed, The biggest risk in the ACMI world is the airline shutting its doors. Ask me how I know. YMMV

My 0.02

I was thankful to be there and think K4 offers a fantastic experience but here is the negative I observed on the 747:

Brutal duty days

seniority is almost irrelevant as far as
scheduling goes.

Dirty old airplanes with a mechanic who lives on the airplane. Understandably, some of these guys are unshowered and near mental breakdown.

Because of the precarious position above many mechanics feel that the airplane is theirs and “some” Captains will submit to that sort of attitude and walk on eggshells around these high strung individuals.

Not fresh sleeping bags for bunk “linens”

Some planes have dirty old seats with black grease stains from oily hair on the headrest.

Alot of “interesting” individuals who wouldn’t fare well in an HR screening.

Extremely conservative pilot group on average.
Talks about pro-Trump and anti liberal agendas is a given. Its assumed you agree.

People seem proud to be relatively free of the PC campaigns so prevalent at other airlines. This shows in some of the comments I’ve heard from other pilots.

I have run into some real ego-trips during training. I have also run into some fantastic instructors. Its a good old boy system but they are trying to weed out the worst offenders.

Again, I could list many positives but this thread is about the negatives and a fair warning to those interested.

When did you work at K4? Most of these things I did not experience in my 10 years there

Seriously? You didn’t experience any of those things? Because every single one of them are accurate.
