A starting paramedic makes about 45K. There a several types of EMT's but basically there are two, EMT-Basic (no drugs, IV or breathing tubes in their skill set) and Paramedics who do all the stuff you see on TV. Your top step will be 60K and with a little OT or side job your can easily make 6 figures. My group works 7, 24 hour shifts per month making it easy to pick up OT. I have 100% BCBS health paid by my employer and a life long annuity pension that goes into effect at 20 years of service. I pay 9% of my base salary into the pension and was vested at 10 years.
Some ambulance services are offering a 5k sign on bonus. Its a tough job but the schedule allows for great flexibility, family time, or even OT to fly for fun.
Police and Fire have similar pay and benifits. City, state and feb jobs are the place to be.
You have to be a basic EMT (4 month class) before going to paramedic school (18-24 months depending on quality of school)
My goal is to retire from EMS in 2010 (at age 43) and shoot for a 135 or 91 job with my pension as a safety net.
Pipe dream? I love flying, a part time gig if things improve will keep me satisfied.
I don't need the uniform or hat. I did that for 6 months with a regional and loved the training, plane and crews. I'll refrain from mentioning what I did not like.....

teachers will be cut back, larger class rooms, forclosures causing less property tax and values. i still think atc is a great job 100 k retirement
at age 55 sounds sweet. oh to be 20 years younger. also pharmacists are in big demand , they make $50 an hour or 100 k a year. truck drivers make 50k , just 3 week course and 3k training vs aviation 2 years training, 70k course and have to kill someone to find a job making 18k a year.

I've been looking into EMT training lately. I have a lot of spare time on my hands due to an injury and I've been looking to get training in an area that I could use as a part-time/fallback job once I get back to flying. What is the pay for someone with just EMT-Basic training? And do you need to work with just basic training before going into training to be a paramedic?

I know of a mod who fits in this this category you described. Lol . People like that are just interesting. They just haven't got the furlough axe yet but when they do, it will be hard for them to find a job outside aviation because of their attitude. In this economy, it's best to have a back.

Look into health care if you can handle the stress and sometimes unpleasant things you are exposed to. You can also find jobs in health care that don't involve direct patient care such as administration or working in a lab.
I'm a paramedic who left a 121 job the day my IOE was finished. Broke my heart but couldn't live off of 21K. I make 90K and I have pension coming in 2010 that will supplement my (still hoping) future pilot carreer. Shouldn't pilot's make the same for being trusted with people's lives?
