Default Starting a business

I am taking an entrepreneur class that is very good. I think it is a nationwide thing. There are other similar classes and workshops that I am planning to attend. In the past I just went for it in regards to opening a business. This class really sets the groundwork for success.

I don't mean to be cynical Sky but this reminds me of about three thousand scams I have seen on late night TV over the years. Are these people recognized scholars of any stripe? Is this a ABET-accredited institution offering degrees of some sort? Do any of the Fortune 500 companies ever refer to their course offerings? What's different from this and anything else you might see offered on a late night TV commercial? Are their students well-represented among the holders of patents? Fill me in.

In my town the class is sponsored by local professionals that support small business like: bankers, lawyers and accountants. It is taught by local business professionals that are well known and is not all that expensive. It is 12 weeks long and the goal is to produce a business plan.

It has been very informative thus far. There are other similar programs that offer business training. Some of it is good others bad. In my opinion if I can come away with even a tiny grain of benefit then it is worth doing.

Even a scam is cheaper and less expensive than college and might just prove useful anyway.

Default Seminars

Back when I first realized that my airline employer probably was not going to be around much longer I started reading books and taking seminars on business. Most were bogus indeed however even the scams offered some value.

Making the change from employee to small business owner requires a complete shift in the way one sees the world and themselves. Even a scam can help to those ends. In the end however reading books is cheaper.

Wow. I don't even know what to say about such as statement.
I hope that you actually don't guide your children towards a scam because of your disdain for higher education

Education comes in many forms. In my experience college does not really prepare one on how the real world functions. A 5 credit class theses days costs over $1000 at my local college and it also does not offer you any assurances. Most scams are only a few hundred dollars in comparison.

My local university offers a huge range of majors. Most are almost completely bogus like an aviation degree. From my perspective a college education can be the biggest scam out there.

My current form of employment has me working with college students. Most graduate worse off then before they came. I can offer one benefit to a college education. It is great for creating a product that is well formed to adapt into institution thinking as with the government.

In the future I believe that the greatest benefits will lie with those who are self employed. I hope my children adopt an entrepreneurial interest.

Also, in case you were not aware of this, my kids are all home schooled anyway.

I'm all for being your own boss. I never liked the idea of putting my life and future in the hands of a single person whose interests are usually for HIS benefit, not mine. That being said, the so called "industry expert instructors" that all these courses seem to utilize are suspect at best.

All the "for profit" colleges that are taking so much heat right now for providing "education" to inner city residents at outrageous prices use the same kind of teachers. University of Phoenix Online, DeVry, ITT Tech...pretty much any "college" you see regularly advertised on TV and radio use supposed "professionals" from the business industry rather than real professors and instructors. Of course they hype it as a superior way to learn, but evidence has proved otherwise. Remember the old adage "Those who can...do, those who can't...teach".

I wish you luck in your endeavour, but since 80% of small business fail within the first 2 years, I wouldn't quit your day job until you have something making money.

All -

Take this as worth of word.
"A scam is better than college."

A hard lesson can be learned in many ways.

Are you going to home school your children through college too (if they chose to attend) or have you already made that choice for them.

And yet you tout higher education all the time and say that you are presently attending some seminars or schooling or such. Just another form of education outside of high school - much like college. You should write. You certainly have a knack for twisting words and then rightly defending the ludicrous notions.

Sky actually has some very valid points concerning higher education.
If he'd be a little more eloquent in the way he opens that argument, I think he'd sound a little more credible.
