That one is *almost* perfect. He was former military, but not fighters. I could tweak the quote, but then it wouldn't be genuine.

Hemingway wrote for "Collier's" magazine as a London correspondent during the V-1 attacks. Here's the relevant article:

Default Dad's Retirement

Give him my best...and congrats.
Saw this 40 some odd years ago, still makes me smile.

"Why I Want To Be A Pilot"

By Tommy Tyler, fifth grader in Jefferson School, Beaufort, S.C.

When I grow up, I want to be a pilot because it's a fun job and easy to do. That's why there are so many pilots flying around these days.

Pilots don't need much school; they just have to learn to read numbers so they can read their instruments. I guess they should be able to read road maps, too, so they can find their way if they get lost.

Pilots should be brave so they won't get scared if it's foggy and they can't see, or if a wing or motor falls off they should stay calm so they'll know what to do.

Pilots have to have good eyes to see through clouds, and they can't be afraid of thunder and lighting because they are so much closer to them than we are.

The salary pilots make is another thing I like. They make more money than they know what to do with. This is because most people think that plane flying is dangerous, except pilots don't because they know how easy it is.

I hope I don't get air-sick, because I get car-sick and if I get air-sick I couldn't be a pilot, and then I would have to go to work.

If you can track down your Dad's first flight instructor or (if in the Military someone in his training unit) he/she usually has a "funny" Quote/Story etc related to something your Dad DID or DIDN''T do during his flight training.

Btw, have someone record his last official "on-duty" flight on Listen to Live ATC (Air Traffic Control) Communications | LiveATC.net and give it to him.

Good Times

"You love a lot of things if you live around them. But there isn't any woman and there isn't any horse, not any before nor after, that is as lovely as a great airplane. And men who love them are faithful to them even though they leave them for others. A man has one virginity to lose in fighters, and if it is a lovely airplane he loses it to, there is where his heart will forever be."

I wish there was a "like" in this forum for such a marvelous quote. I'm leaving the career next year after forty six years, starting on the C-46 and ending on the Dreamliner.

Once the wings go on, they never come off whether they can be seen or not. It fuses to the soul through adversity, fear and adrenaline, and no one who has ever worn them with pride, integrity and guts can ever sleep through the ‘call of the wild’ that wafts through bedroom windows in the deep of the night.
When a good flyer leaves the ‘job’ and retires, many are jealous, some are pleased and yet others, who may have already retired, wonder. We wonder if he knows what he is leaving behind, because we already know. We know, for example, that after a lifetime of camaraderie that few experience, it will remain as a longing for those past times. We know in the world of flying, there is a fellowship which lasts long after the flight suits are hung up in the back of the closet. We know even if he throws them away, they will be on him with every step and breath that remains in his life. We also know how the very bearing of the man speaks of what he was and in his heart still is.
Because we flew, we envy no man on earth.”

"For I dipt into the future, far as human eye could see,
Saw the Vision of the world, and all the wonder that would be;

Saw the heavens fill with commerce, argosies of magic sails,
Pilots of the purple twilight dropping down with costly bales;"

--Alfred, Lord Tennyson

I retired at age 60 after 34years in the cockpit both military and civilian. UAL T38Phlyer pretty well summed it up for me. Really great quote.
