FFDO packing list update pls

The other thread on this topic is closed, appreciate an update. It mentioned boonie hats and noise cancelling ear protection, special holster??? Is all that necessary? Their packing list mentioned a sturdy web belt, which makes sense. Any updates/recommendations?

Thanks in advance.

ugleeual 03-02-2017 03:13 PM

Have a good one... pm sent.

Bring a belt. Everything else will be provided.

And leave your speed loader at home. Unless you like getting ridiculed.

A good belt is all you need.

IDIOTPILOT 03-03-2017 02:52 AM

Good belt. Don't get larger than 1.5 inches.

If you have your own ear and eye protection that you like, then you can use it. They give you a hat. They have hydration, backbacks, and other things for you. Unless it changed, you need to bring your own shoes. You don't need to get tactical boots or anything, regular sneakers will do fine.

There is a convenience store with things if you forgot or want something.

NavyFlyer 03-03-2017 07:23 AM

Literally, tennis shoes, underwear, socks and a belt are all you'll need. They provide EVERYTHING. You will be bringing a few things home with you (hat, hearing and eye protection, Nalgene bottle), so have some extra room in your suitcase.

Thanks. Can I get a good web belt, or does the leather work better. (Just for training.)

Get a good leather gun belt. The same one you'll be wearing in uniform.

Whiplash6 03-03-2017 01:22 PM

You can even buy a belt there on the facility if you have to. Just pack whatever you feel like bringing but you really don't need much.

Saddleback leather out of TX. 100 year guarantee. One piece leather that will tow a car. I wear with my uniform (the old bull belt) and as my everyday belt - complete with Sig Sauer - at home.
Plus, the holes are spaced at smaller intervals than your typical belt. Allows you to go for seconds at the buffet:eek:

Pricey but the last belt you'll need.

With a 100 year warranty, that belt will outlive me!

Motto is, "they'll fight over it after you're dead." I have a lot of their stuff. Wallet, iPad cover, notebook cover, etc. Full grain leather (best you can get). If you're lucky you'll get a brand or barb wire scars on it. No seriously, some of their stuff has it.

Cycle Pilot 03-06-2017 07:41 AM

I got my belt from Bull Hide Belts. I've been really happy with it. Good quality gun belt and customer service.

I love the motto! So I take it that their products are worth their cost then?

Absolutely. It's pretty unique stuff. Owner has a ton of videos on his website on why his product is better. He even did a tongue in cheek video on how to knock off his bag. Which really showed why his product was superior. Parachute cord stitching, rivets, etc. those bags are...dare I say...beautiful. There's videos all over the Internet that review his gear. My favorite is the one that shows where to fit the 1911!

Had an FBI guy on the plane. Struck up a gun conversation. Lifted his suit coat to reveal his service weapon. I was like, "is that a Saddleback Leather belt? " Yep. Said it was the only belt he's found to stand up to everyday carry. Plus, the SB logo - etched into the leather - is a Labrador Retriever wearing a sombrero. Who can't appreciate a Labrador wearing a sombrero?:D

Thanks, I'll definitely check them out as I'm looking for a new belt. To they scratch easily from holsters?

Any link to the video? Couldn't find it.

Amish made, best prices and last a lifetime. You can also switch buckles. Recommend you use at training what you will wear to work, you'll be more comfortable with it.

I was a big Saddleback fan until a few months ago when they jacked their prices up. Their stuff was always pricy, but to me it was worth it. In September the prices went up significantly, and for me the products aren't worth the new prices.

That being said, I do love my Tow Belts from Saddleback. Plenty stiff enough for carrying, and should last the rest of my career.

u order the 1/4 inch thickness on the belt or the "normal" thickness? I've read the thicker leather won't fit loops of a dress/uniform pants... thoughts?

How to knock off a bag:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=a11wlngpuSY

If you search "Saddleback large bag review" you'll find a bunch.
They did raise their prices significantly recently. I believe that serves two purposes: increased production costs and to make the bag more exclusive. Once they got some publicity I believe demand outstripped ability to produce.

Funny, I never knew this but the owner lives in my city in TX (disclaimer... I don't get anything from plugging these bags). They have a pretty "Western/TX/Indiana Jones" look and I happen to that. They weather well and get a great worn patina.

Because the belts are pure leather they will naturally wear with holster use but it doesn't look bad. I routinely carry the Sig P229 (.40) or P238 (.380) depending on where I'm going and what I'm wearing. And since my wife carries the P238 we can exchange magazines during a prolonged firefight.;) Although she does prefer her AR with Hello Kitty stock. She's also a muscle car girl (I know, lucky guy right? Except for that Baltimore Ravens thing mental illness).

Product review: sense of scale with the bags...includes the Colt 1911

I haven't had any issues with the 1/4" belt fitting on my uniform pants. I also wear it to the range with my jeans. Hope that helps.

Thanks! Do you only have the Old Bull Belt, or do you have the Tow Belt too? I'm just curious what the difference is. Also the Sig P229 is a great gun!

GUFN 03-07-2017 03:38 PM

Consider Barbed Wire Leather's double thick belt http://www.bwleather.com

Got one 15 years ago and wearing it now.

TheRaven 03-07-2017 06:37 PM

Coincidence that as I put my belt on this morning it broke and I find this thread tonight.....I think not. One is winging it's way to my house as I type this.

Just have the old bull in black. I'm still laughing about the B6 uniform belt. I was able to snap it in half the day it was issued. I've been wearing the old bull with my uniform since day one - had it before I was hired. He's got the measurements on the website. Be sure and check before ordering to get the right size. I had the 36" but then went to the 34" when I lost about 15 pounds. The 36 still fit but I had a good amount of the belt tucked into belt loops (if memory serves I was on the second to the last hole). Nice thing is they space the holes smaller than your standard belt so to me it's never too loose or too tight. I'm not an FFDO, just a TX CHL holder that shoots fairly regularly. I also fly GA to remote SW TX so I'm carrying out there for survival purposes. I've also been jumped by coyotes in our neighborhood while walking dogs. I conceal carry fairly often. And no I don't carry Long guns to Walmart:rolleyes:

Training while distracted is a key fundamental during training.

Happy to help!

What is the best way to get to and from the training facility there now? I have heard guys say it's best to rent a car and others say that you don't have any free time anyway so why bother. Car pooling or "chartering" transportation sounds like a pretty good idea. Obviously going to training probably doesn't work for that since one hasn't really met anybody to pool resources with at that point but while there and then going back it makes total sense.

Thanks!

When I went through two years ago they provided transportation to Roswell and ABQ at the beginning and end of training unless that has changed.

Bus ride from ABQ is about 4 hours. I bought a ticket out of DFW to ROW. Much shorter 30 minute drive and it was worth the zed fare price to make the trip headache free. There were several folks who rented a car and drove to ABQ or LBB just to get a head start out of Artesia after training was over.

Random question, I know the course is free, but is lodging provided or do you have to rent a hotel, if so any recommendations? Also, hows the food situation? Eating out every night? (sts) or can you do it on the cheap?

Thanks!
