Anybody read up on how Skybus is going to operate. They are taking low cost carrier to a whole new level. It is true they sound alot like Ryan air, except ryan air pays their pilots extreamly well sky bus does not.

Secondary airports, not using jetways, no reservation counters at airport, Advertising painted on outside of plane as well as advertising throughout the cabin, as well as selling items on the plane(been called a duty free store in the sky), and of coarse their big cost reduction(the only one that departs from the ryan air model).... Employee wages! FA's will make 9 dollars an hour with no per diem! tho they get a 10% commision off what ever they sell and of coarse their ridiculous pilot wages.

Skybus=bad news for the industy

I met a couple of skybus guys going thru training during my weekend layover at the sherry in MIA. One was a former dal guy (over 50, took the lump sum) and was doing it for the second career. Other guy was furloughed twa/aa guy awaiting recall. He said (not sure if it's true so don't shoot the messenger!) that upon recall, he would be a left seater in STL due to the fences set up by the twa acquistion. I asked him about going back to aa, and he was so-so about the prospects (maybe he thought I was a skybus plant?).

$65k for the capts and $40k for the right seaters is what he told me. Based in Columbus with all new airplanes. They are enjoying training and don't seemto mind the future pay. I think they are hoping for rapid growth and the prospect of being in on the ground floor of something that will grow rapidly.

Who would want to get on an airplane, and have people trying to sell you watches and perfume and all the other garbage I'm reading here. They probably prefer pilots with a sales or advertising degree, so they can come out mid flight and negotiate prices with you.

I don't normally post here, but I will this time to describe my one and only experience flying a European low cost airline. It was on Windjet (http://w1.volawindjet.it/) based in Catania, Italy. We decided to take it from Catania back to Fiumicino instead of the 10 hour long train ride.

The plane was nice and clean. The front and back doors were open so passengers got on twice as fast. The FAs were young, good looking and efficient. Even though the flight was short, we got free drinks and a panini. I don't recall anyone trying to sell me anything, but I wouldn't buy anyway. Didn't get to see whether the pilots were cute. Who wouldn't swoon over an Italian hunk?

It all depends on when he was hired and if there is a seat available. It is a true statement and the language is there however it is all based on the staffing numbers.

Does Southwest go into Columbus? I would imagine that SouthWest is going to fight Skybus touth and nail.

It doesn't surprise me that retired captains with lump sum payments will try to get in on the ground floor. They will subsidize their incomes with 6-12% on the lump sum payments and the skybus money will be gravy. For some of the new guys, it will be a final stop.

I still say the price fixing, and "plane dumping" of Airbus makes it harder for everyone.
