No way are my tax dollars going to fund something that makes society a better place. Dissolve the nation. Lord of the flies!

You can't be that stupid. Do you really think it is a net positive financially to get a year of pay without working, followed by having to provide for the next 20 years? I hope you are trolling, and I hope you never have kids.

We don't govern based on what polls well otherwise we would still have slavery.
Slavery polls well? Where do you live?

Apples and oranges. People who work for a top 50 company want to minimize their time away from the office. It’s a dog eat dog climb up the company ladder and you can’t afford to be missing. The airlines on the other hand, have a line number/seniority system. You can leave for 6 months or 6 years — and it no matter — you keep on moving up....so no harm in staying out as long as possible.

I know people that I strongly suspect had kids just for that 'a year' (in-laws)*. Just because it's not smart, doesn't mean it doesn't happen... doesn't mean me and you aren't paying for it.

*Disclosure: They live in another, more socialistic minded, country. So, in their case, WE are not paying for it. But someone is.

My wife had a good paying job and quit when we had kids. It was a huge pain in the butt making things work with half the income, but we are responsible human beings and planned accordingly. It is truly mind boggling that people actually think it is someone else’s problem and they get to have kids without any thought or plan. It ain’t my problem if you can’t be an adult and make responsible decisions.

6 weeks paid maternity leave with the option of an additional 6 month unpaid. Seems like a good compromise to me.

Most reputable corporations offer 3 times that paid. In fact, in the last 10 years, of the friends I have at those places, the trend has been slowly increasing.
