30 day shut down of air travel must happen

Given the hysteria, It’s only going to get worse. This is honestly the only option for salvaging our industry. Hit the reset button. The virus peaks and starts to decline. They announce an aggressive deep cleaning campaign. Come back with a bang. They need to rip the bandaid off right now though. Otherwise just putting along for months with falling bookings and hemorrhaging money is just going to burn through cash even faster. This is a psychological virus more than anything.

This is one of the worst ideas I have ever heard. It would take 90 days just to get things spun back up again.

You are correct. This is a pretty long article, but has a lot of in depth analysis.

Maybe you can help save your company cash and quit your job right now.

If this was some flesh eating bacteria then sure I would agree with you. It’s the flu.

...and the survival rate is almost 100%, except for the elderly and pre-existing conditions, and even then the mortality rate is very low.

If I knew how to paste a doc here I could share a very interesting spread sheet.

Media needs to stop spreading panic over the common cold virus. The idiotic masses need to go back to work and school and quit buying ramen and toilet paper. Sorry people it’s everywhere, you can’t hide from it, and it’s just not that bad for people without pre existing conditions. (Same as any other cold virus or flu). Media wants to ruin the economy since it’s an election year and that’s the main driving factor.

Name User 03-14-2020 06:52 AM

If the Admin had restricted travel from Asia back in Jan with everyone coming in getting tested before being released through customs, you can bet the media would claim it was xenophobia from the current admin.

You really can't win with those pricks, which is why I no longer watch the news.

It’s possible activists are sensationalizing this to create a recession to affect the election (see some comments by Bill Maher who supports this strategy), and the administration is going to the extreme as a response.

Better for Washington to go beyond what’s necessary than to be criticized for not doing enough.

yep. Italy shut down its entire economy to push trump toward a loss.

“It’s not a real disease it’s all media hype” is such a 2 weeks ago viewpoint. Get a clue, dude.

Vox has multiple articles about how it's just xenophobia. Granted they are the same kind of outlet that denies biological sex exists... so not understanding biology/ how viruses spread is to be expected.

With the 24/7 coverage continuing to foster an environment of fear, I’d be surprised if this doesn’t happen in the next week or two.

Speaking of racist, sexist, bigoted, misogynistic, xenophobic people... Mexico wants to keep Americans out. They are considering closing their border.

It would be hilarious if because of the pandemic they offer to pay for a border wall :D

The DOD just halted all domestic travel, it's not just a "cold". It's insane to be operating airliners around the country right now. We need to stop flying for minimum two weeks and let the CDC re-evaluate.

I find it hilarious that the same people who can’t be bothered to get a flu shot are now stocking up on soup and toilet paper and telling the whole world to grind to a stop.

Turn off the TV. Go for a walk. Read a book. This too shall pass.

What I find concerning is we’ve become a society of fear, cowardice and panic following after hysteria, rather than of strength and fortitude.

Do sensible things, like good hygiene (which should always be the case) and live life with confidence.

trip 03-14-2020 07:49 AM

The same people? Ill be getting my ranch in order, we'll be fine.

https://www.defense.gov/Newsroom/Rel...-restrictions/

Today the Deputy Secretary of Defense David L. Norquist approved new travel restrictions for service members, DoD civilians, and their families assigned to DoD installations, facilities and surrounding areas within the United States and its territories. This restriction will halt all domestic travel, including Permanent Change of Station, and Temporary Duty. This restriction will also pause civilian hiring at DoD installations and components for persons who do not reside within the hiring entity's local commuting area.

Additionally, service members will be authorized local leave only, following Service guidelines. This new guidance is effective March 16 and continues through May 11.

As much as it would suck to shut down travel for a month, it kinda sounds like we're gonna end up there anyway and maybe a temporary halt might regain some semblance of reason to the mass population.

Yep...hitting the reset button psychologically might calm the panic. Unless the media claims the airlines didn’t shutdown long enough.

PILOTGUY 03-14-2020 08:12 AM

So 2.7 million pax a day with less than 2200 CV cases in the US. That works out to about 0.000814%. Seems just a tad low
of a percentage to shut down the airlines.

The airlines shutting down for 2-4weeks will only add to the hysteria.

exactly. Along with the CEO’s of Delta, United, and Disney. The head of the NCAA, NBA, and all other sports leagues, the head of Augusta National. All of whom likely voted for trump, and will again. Yep, they all decided to go along with the media conspiracy to get trump out of office. Ridiculous.

they don’t have the ability to do that. It’s pure panic

Correct me if I’m wrong, but it appears the additional restrictions (as of right now) are Ireland and UK.

Why don't we look at the numbers after the pandemic is over not when it's in its infancy and doubling every few days eh?

kingairfun 03-14-2020 11:11 AM

If they were considering a 30 day shutdown... Seems it would be easy for the gov't to "bail out" airlines for a month... couple Billion dollars of aid to keep financials in order and everyone paid....

Wouldn't be too hard.. "Airline X, your revenue was $XX.xx last April, here you go, heres $XXX.xx million"

Sounds like it’s definitely a possibility now. And yes, if this happens, then absolutely they can help us out.

Slaphappy 03-14-2020 11:15 AM

Close the borders and shut down all travel.

^^^This. Along these same lines, I'm sure China temporarily dismantled part of its economy and the Prime Minister of Canada's wife got this just to help the MSM score points against Trump so that he loses. I'm sure Trump ordered the DOD to no longer let active duty military like my wife travel outside the US, I'm sure his European travel ban, and I'm sure Pence's words about considering domestic travel restrictions is because they hate themselves and they want to collude with democrats, CNN and Rachel Maddow.

The ignorance, paranoia and flat out stupidity on here is breathtaking.

Here is the reality of coronavirus. This lady would have never known she had it if it wasn’t for the fact she was in a flu study.

Nor any of her multiple friends who were at the party with her.

The reality is that many multitudes more people have this, or already had it and are better, than is being reported because we are only testing the worst cases. We are only testing the people showing up at the hospitals.

Imagine if we only tested flu cases that ended in the hospital as well.

As we begin to test many hundreds of thousand more we will quickly realize this isn’t killing anywhere near the % being thrown around.

The same article is on CNN (https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/12/healt...der/index.html). What the Fox News article conveniently leaves out that is in the CNN article is that this woman is only 37 years old. Yes, this virus represents nothing worse than the seasonal flu (in terms of danger/risk) for the vast majority of Americans under the age of 70. This is already known, acknowledged, and old news. This virus has a higher mortality rate in people over 70 and those younger with serious medical conditions (comorbidities like type 2 diabetes, heart disease and autoimmune diseases).

Based on pre-existing data we're getting from Europe (Not China or Iran), COVID-19 is significantly more deadly than the seasonal flu for these at-risk groups (>70 years old or with those specific pre-existing conditions); it's somewhere between the flu and SARS in terms of mortality rates, but it's significantly more infectious than SARS. The reason why Trump/Pence are taking drastic action right now is because of the "flattening the curve" argument. If even half of those older Americans (>50 million in this demographic) get sick and go to the hospital, it will overwhelm our hospitals and our healthcare system in general. If this happens, more people will die, not because coronavirus is so incredibly deadly, but because we will not have the resources to treat everyone as we normally would. This is what is currently happening in northern Italy.

If you think Trump/Pence are making the wrong decisions, that's between you and them. I for one am extremely grateful that they are now taking this more seriously and doing what they are doing. I hope it's over soon but if we don't try to flatten that curve by buying ourselves more time and reducing the strain on our hospitals, it will get much worse. And not for 37 year olds like the woman in the article you posted, but for my elderly parents and grandparents.

Xtreme87 03-14-2020 03:10 PM

Aaaaahhhhhnnnyway. While you all argue. 30 days now for all of us, or many years for a lot of us later. It’s getting close to the point of no return as far as economic damage. Preserve now, or die a slow death. China did it, South Korea is almost out of it.

I don't trust the numbers coming out of China; I think it's a given their government is wildly inflating the number of recoveries versus deaths in an effort to save face. There are even some senior Chinese bureaucrats who are pushing a conspiracy theory that COVID-19 was created by the US government and spread by US Army soldiers who were visiting Hubei a few months before the known outbreak started. I wish I was joking but I'm not (https://qz.com/1817736/china-fuels-c...aming-us-army/). Now that the internet is awash in fake news, why not, I guess. There are plenty of people stupid enough to believe that this might have been created by the US government, just like the people who believe this was a Chinese bioweapons lab experiment gone wrong, and the people who believed/still believe this is a media hoax to hurt Trump's re-election. People are stupid.

Dont need to lock down travel just need to lock down old farts.

Pretty simple solution

You missed the entire point... we can’t know how deadly it is if we aren’t testing.

She along with thousands upon thousands of other people aren’t even seeking testing because their symptoms are minor. You can’t know a mortality rate without first knowing how many people are actually infected.

Don’t forget Tom Hanks and Rita testing positive too, further evidence of the radical left, Hollywood elitists banding together to keep ‘Murica from being great.

Now that POTUS has declared a state of emergency, when can we have the next Rally? I’m feeling a little sneezy and I wanna spread the “it’s just a cold” love...

Yes, some are. And each of us can do our part by calling out stupid.

In an age of the internet, satellites and 3D body scanners, we have people that think the earth is flat and inoculations don’t work.

We have to fight ignorance with education, and help people understand the difference between belief and knowledge.

I just love seeing such insightful takes on this situation from mainline pilots. It's really great knowing that some of you guys make more in a month than I do in a year, doing easier flying, working fewer days, all while having room temperature IQ's.
