Fun thread here but your quote doesn’t ring true. |
Times are great when guys are needing, and can, make $110k first year.
When it eventually crashes, as it always does, some people will be in for a shocker. Ignorance is bliss when you only know the upside of this career. |

I’d take a loan against my own 401k. The interest rate is around 5%. They should be able to pay back the difference in less than 3 years.

I believe there’s a stipulation that your 401k loan has to be from the current employer’s 401k program. If you’re no longer working there you have six months to pay it back or pay a penalty.
Roll what you need into your new employer then do the loan. |

Worst case, like I said, cash out the new 401k and eat the penalty. |

You can make that sort of money doing unskilled work. You realize you can comprehend these are good times, and also realize the industry has a history of kicking pilots in their nuts while enjoying the good times. Starry eyed is great until it isn’t. And check the tape, I didn’t admonish anyone, simply pointing out how good things are currently that this is a barrier to entry for some people. |

Again, why does the OP NEED/REQUIRE that specific $110K number?
Sell your F150 and buy a 1998 Honda Civic. Take a home equity loan, personal loan, family loan, etc. Cancel cable. Cut costs. Stop eating fast food and cook at home. It’s just for one year. You won’t lose $110K, just the difference. So what, $20K loss? You will get it back. Just think—you don’t need to fork out $10K for the type like 7000 current SWA pilots did. |
$26,520 according to the Honda website. Add tax, license, and dealer prep and I could see it being around $30,000 but certainly not $40,000.

Never in my life have I spent more than $5000 for any car. Always paid cash. Take care of them and drive them into the ground.
Cars are utilities, nothing more, unless you can afford better. --- "It's really expensive to be poor" is true enough though. People making $30k/yr can't afford a cash car for $5k and get sucked into 7+ year loans for USED cars. Which they can't afford to take care of. It's a vicious cycle. |

Good luck finding a car that runs for $5k.
And how much will that $5k car cost you when you break down and can't make it to work? |

And how much will that $5k car cost you when you break down and can't make it to work? Cars (if you don't live in a metropolitan area with good public transport) are a wholly predictable expense. Like a new roof, HVAC, water heater, washer/dryer, refrigerator, etc. If you're surprised when they fail, I can't help you. Because THEY'RE ENGINEERED TO FAIL. Amazed that people don't monthly budget for the next car. "AHHHHH! My car broke!!! I need to beg a car salesman to lend me money on any terms for a new car!!! I thought it would last forever!!!" (FWIW, I've found government auto auctions to be a decent place for "good enough" cars that have been on federally funded maintenance schedules.) |
Budget for the next car? I have 7 cars, rolex watches, 5k suites, styling profiling, mom kiss stealing, limousine riding jet flying son of a gun! Whoooo
Oh and as an international widebody guy... Last year I spent more money, on spilled liquor, in bars from one side of this world to the other, than you made. |

“The Millionaire Next door” really should be required reading for pilots, doctors, and most lawyers.

drop about 10k off the cost of that accord and you are right. Can you pay 40k for an accord? Absolutely. But they don’t start there.

I generally spend more than $5000 but I agree with the premise. I always buy used cars. Never finance (I'm not a Ramsey disciple but I don't like financing things that depreciate). Maintain my cars well. And drive them till they are falling apart or, more usually, circumstances change requiring I have a different model vehicle.

The newest car in my fleet is a 2003, which has been my airport beater and work truck for years. Otherwise it's a fleet of classic cars I keep insured under Grundy for agreed value, which go up every year in agreed value. No limousines however.

Peoples mom’s buy me new cars all the time.
Yeah it’s like that.. |

Only on APC can we flaunt how much we make on one thread but also brag about who has the cheapest POS for a car on another.
