Fun thread here but your quote doesn’t ring true.

Yeah and the fact that AS is even on the list screams large high COL west coast location. And I know all the guys who live in a Midland or Little Rock and play the municipal course will be like "just move" but if the kids are anchored with the ex, you're stuck.

Times are great when guys are needing, and can, make $110k first year.

When it eventually crashes, as it always does, some people will be in for a shocker. Ignorance is bliss when you only know the upside of this career.

I believe there’s a stipulation that your 401k loan has to be from the current employer’s 401k program. If you’re no longer working there you have six months to pay it back or pay a penalty.

Roll what you need into your new employer then do the loan.

Seriously? If a child born today can't get a $1m/yr new-hire job before he retires then pay isn't keeping up with inflation.

Yup because this industry has always followed a linear pay progression, keeping up with inflation. Never had any downturns in the industry where rates were reset, pilots furloughed, pension plans gutted. Sure, that will never happen again. Million dollar starting just around the corner. Sure…sure.

That's typical from I've seen, and is probably mandated by the federal code.

Verify that's possible with the new employer. It's legal but the specific plan also has to allow it.

Worst case, like I said, cash out the new 401k and eat the penalty.

a Honda Accord starts at $40k out the door today. The average home is quickly approaching $400k and is even more expensive in many airline bases. 100k for an adult person with adult responsibilities isn’t much at all. You can make that sort of money doing unskilled work. The post has been moved quickly and we as a profession aren’t doing ourselves any favors by admonishing folks who cant make it on $20/hr like we’d like to remember we could.

And like I said; we will never furlough again, contracts will never be reset, retirement plans won’t be altered, right? Because the “post” has been moved, yet the industry has always loved to move the “post” in various directions. Seriously?

You realize you can comprehend these are good times, and also realize the industry has a history of kicking pilots in their nuts while enjoying the good times. Starry eyed is great until it isn’t. And check the tape, I didn’t admonish anyone, simply pointing out how good things are currently that this is a barrier to entry for some people.

drop about 10k off the cost of that accord and you are right. Can you pay 40k for an accord? Absolutely. But they don’t start there.

at6d 06-05-2022 01:16 PM

Again, why does the OP NEED/REQUIRE that specific $110K number?

Sell your F150 and buy a 1998 Honda Civic.

Take a home equity loan, personal loan, family loan, etc.

Cancel cable. Cut costs. Stop eating fast food and cook at home.

It’s just for one year. You won’t lose $110K, just the difference. So what, $20K loss? You will get it back.

Just think—you don’t need to fork out $10K for the type like 7000 current SWA pilots did.

Duckdude 06-05-2022 01:19 PM

$26,520 according to the Honda website. Add tax, license, and dealer prep and I could see it being around $30,000 but certainly not $40,000.

DeltaboundRedux 06-05-2022 01:27 PM

Never in my life have I spent more than $5000 for any car. Always paid cash. Take care of them and drive them into the ground.

Cars are utilities, nothing more, unless you can afford better.

---

"It's really expensive to be poor" is true enough though. People making $30k/yr can't afford a cash car for $5k and get sucked into 7+ year loans for USED cars. Which they can't afford to take care of. It's a vicious cycle.

I have suits and watches that cost more than 5k.

Good luck finding a car that runs for $5k.

And how much will that $5k car cost you when you break down and can't make it to work?

You could do that at United easily . Just depends how much you want to work . And select a junior airplane as to be off reserve .

just flew with a captain who made 100K in January on the 737 , but that’s a dif story

Uh, yes. Yes you can. (Current car is 25 years old. Looks like $hit. Runs like a top. BECAUSE I MAINTAIN IT. Religiously. Gas mileage sucks though. LOL. Current "value" estimated $335-$3600 bucks.)

Cars (if you don't live in a metropolitan area with good public transport) are a wholly predictable expense. Like a new roof, HVAC, water heater, washer/dryer, refrigerator, etc. If you're surprised when they fail, I can't help you. Because THEY'RE ENGINEERED TO FAIL.

Amazed that people don't monthly budget for the next car. "AHHHHH! My car broke!!! I need to beg a car salesman to lend me money on any terms for a new car!!! I thought it would last forever!!!"

(FWIW, I've found government auto auctions to be a decent place for "good enough" cars that have been on federally funded maintenance schedules.)

pitchtrim 06-05-2022 06:11 PM

Budget for the next car? I have 7 cars, rolex watches, 5k suites, styling profiling, mom kiss stealing, limousine riding jet flying son of a gun! Whoooo

Oh and as an international widebody guy... Last year I spent more money, on spilled liquor, in bars from one side of this world to the other, than you made.

Pete “Maverick “ Mitchell is that you ?

“The Millionaire Next door” really should be required reading for pilots, doctors, and most lawyers.

Have you tried purchasing one? I have. What you pay is not even close to msrp. 40k otd is the reality these days.

yes. I bought one recently. Like I said, if you get the touring or sport 2.0, you’ll pay 40k. LX, sport, or EX. Not even close.

I generally spend more than $5000 but I agree with the premise. I always buy used cars. Never finance (I'm not a Ramsey disciple but I don't like financing things that depreciate). Maintain my cars well. And drive them till they are falling apart or, more usually, circumstances change requiring I have a different model vehicle.

Likewise. But unlike Deltabound I don't like drivng beaters (or having them in my driveway) so I drop a little coin to maintain the paint and interior too, as needed.

pitchtrim 06-06-2022 06:28 AM

The newest car in my fleet is a 2003, which has been my airport beater and work truck for years. Otherwise it's a fleet of classic cars I keep insured under Grundy for agreed value, which go up every year in agreed value. No limousines however.

Airhoss 06-06-2022 07:22 AM

After I picked up the moms in what they believe is a 10k Miata, they then bought me suits and watches that are worth over 5k.

Only on APC can we flaunt how much we make on one thread but also brag about who has the cheapest POS for a car on another.

Are you saying that your suits, watches, and cars don’t all cost the same amount? Apparently, $5,000 is a good price for all three of these items.
