Who’s next

It seems like most of the regionals, aside for republic, have now come out with their new TAs with significant improvements in pay as well as other contractual improvements.

Sun Country was very early to the table with new rates.

Predictions on who will be next for new pay rates?

Alaska is reportedly very close.

Whether or not it moves the needle remains to be seen.

I wouldn't be surprised if Frontier tries or has tried to up the rates without addressing any other provisions in the CBA. There's a rumor going around Facebook that they offered $30/hr across the board. That'd be a great way to start some seniority based warfare if they got away with it. 11.5% for maxed out captains and close to 30% for year 2 folks.

I'm hoping nobody falls for mere hourly rate increases without addressing the remainder of the contract.

With the number of open grievances? Yeah they might have to try harder than a carrot....

What's the point of a contract when they do whatever they went?

Haven't everyone (not maxed) been complaining of the slope?

I'm sure this came with strings like a four year extension of something ridiculous.

That's a very good point.

The point is to hold management accountable for what they agreed to. That’s what the dispute process is for. The only way to give away anything is to not use that process as painfully slow as it is.

We are one management deception from it not being close at all. There are referees in that regard (the NMB) but that process moves very slowly. The only losers are the pilots. Who are years out on even having a raise, with record inflation while working for an airline that has record profits.

I'm assuming that particular management team is still keeping an eye out for an angle to screw the pilots as usual. So wouldn't bank on anything just yet.

But they may be in or very close to checkmate, since the top boyz (I use the term loosely) are in danger of loosing their own jobs if operational meltdowns and bad publicity continue... they probably don't have time to wait for the next big recession, nuclear war, etc. They probably got a little hopeful with the red army moving west into Europe, but that fizzled quickly. The one they thing they value more than defeating the pilot group (again) is their own cushy gigs.

.
The real question here is if the operational meltdowns and resultant mass cancelations are not actively being planned for? Profits during the last meltdown season and resultant consolidation were massive. 14% I believe. Staffing woes may not be leverage if the meltdowns result in record profits. Is this how the airline will be run? In the long term? Short term? Only time will tell. Look for the next crisis February 1.

People making well over six figures complaining about inflation. Love it.

Give a pilot a bag of money and they will complain how heavy it is.

Secretary Buttigieg, is that you?

crash312 09-19-2022 07:40 PM

Jetblue MEC just changed directions....now going for short term extension focusing on pay rates rather than comprehensive contract negotiations that may or may not have concluded before a merger. As soon as one major's viable TA is announced, I think you'll see it followed up quickly by all the others that are currently in negotiations.

Frontier was only a rumor not going to happen.

Margaritaville 09-20-2022 07:06 AM

What if I told you that the only reason the legacies are throwing all this money at the regionals is to kill the ULCCs by starving them of pilots?

That would actually be illegal if they said it out loud or put it in writing.

But I think it's a band-aid at best because anyone who isn't a Compleat Moroon knows the nature of the regional model, and it's prospects for long-term lucrative, stable employment. Just met 50-something new hire, he bailed after nearly 20 years at one of the more reputable regionals

I suspect they (legacies) might have a plan of some sort, but just need to time to implement it. Maybe I'm giving them too much credit.

No doubt its also a band aid on the hemorrhaging of pilots but yeah someone would have to be a complete fool to pass up a legacy to stay at a regional, even with the high pay and bonuses. I think everyone knows it can't last and isn't falling for it. I don't believe legacy management is that stupid, plus they know it's going to give legacy pilots unreasonable expectations of what to expect in the contracts. Therefore there must be ulterior motives to make this cost out. People like me talk crap about management, but let's be honest, they play 4D chess most of the time while pilots play checkers looking through a straw.

It seems more likely that some legacy networks are very reliant on the RJ model and can't change fast enough to upguage or lose domestic share. They need the RJ's to function a little longer until mainline can adjust and/or the economy dries up the sudden demand for pilots.

I think it will make a difference for those over 50 who live in base and have lots of seniority. Those are also the core of the instructor cadre, 20-year guys leaving the regionals was going to kill them off faster than anything else. I would have thought long and hard.

They play chess with contracts. But I don't think they really believed in Pilot Shortage until it happened, at which point it was too late. I think they got caught with their pants down. The top managers are scrambling to avoid catastrophic operational meltdowns, because enough of that will get them fired. I assume they are planning ahead, but I don't think they're executing on that yet, they're just reacting.

In fairness covid was a distraction, and they initially though they'd need to furlough 40% and hunker down for ten years.

Looks like it more or less gets them up to where we are now. Certainly no help for our contract.

Don't know, but (somewhat surprisingly) Frontier is filling big classes. 55+ new hires with 100% showing up
