Yeah, there's also a "cargo" section and a "charter" section here. You'll probably find more there.

A guy has been posting about USAJet on a pretty regular basis. They're looking for people. I don't know what they're like to work for but for the most part all of those pilots hauling car parts seemed to hate life when they came into STL, and I saw a lot of them before ford shut down.

I read somewhere that they discourage commuters... is that true?

Hi!

PM me with your email for a ton of info on USA Jet.

Short Answers:
usajetairlines.com
activeaero.com

25" callout (for freighters)-bad.
On call 24/7 (you can rotate to the bottom of the list and/or get short time off the callout to do stuff)-bad.
Not knowing where you're going until the last minute (for freighters) Bad? Good? Definitely interesting.
Starting crew rest after checking into your hotel room-Good.
Getting extra rest when you ask for it-Good.
Calling fatigued and that's the end of the story-Good.
Very flexible scheduling-Good.
They take care of you as much as practical for the industry...
Ex: My dad was dying-I found out in ELP at the end of a trip with no easy way to jumpseat out (now we can use SWA and AWA as they're part of USAir), so the company bought me a ticket ELP-PNS.

Moving to Detroit has been changed (finally!). You have to "move here and at least establish a crashpad." About 1/4 of the guys commute. Furthest is MCI, GSP, MSP. Most guys commute on NWA-USA Jet is CASS.

Hiring IS direct into the -9, and if you meet the quals, we need the pilots there. -9 gets 13 days off/month-usually 1-3 blocks of days off which makes it easier to commute.

About 1/2 the -9 guys fly pax. If you are a "Primary" pax guy during the NCAA season you have a 6 months schedule of 6 on/whatever off. You do some reserve. If you're a "Alternate" you do mostly reserve-2 hour callout.

Cost of living is kind of high, except houses are cheap now. If you have a family and fly only freight, you'll be home a lot, and it makes it easy to sell days off back (4 hours of pay/day). One of our Falcon FOs last year made $7K one month. One of our Falcon capts in Feb made approx. $17K.
Note: I would NEVER live in DTW (well, if someone paid me $350K/yr. I would for a while).

The freighters are freighters. The PAX -9s look fantastic, but they do break as they pretty old. The -9-10s have 50 seats, the -30s 74 seats.
The PAX planes have a mechanic on board (no spares). If the freighters are broken, you either get them fixed or go to the hotel. All the planes have GPS, most Falcons with a color map, and all have RVSM.

DB is a Check Airman in the ABQ gov't operation: 3 -9s, 1 GIII, 1 Lear 35 and 2 Twin Otters. The -9s will be replaced with -737s in FY2009. AH is Chief Pilot in ABG, GW in YIP.

Avg flight hours are 45/month. Some months it's less, sometimes you're at 100/30. We are now taking low time guys (not for the -9), but it takes them a long time to get the hours to upgrade 3000/4000 Falcon/-9 so guys with the time are upgrading to Falcon Capt pretty fast.

We've had 8 guys leave since Xmas: 2 NWA/1 DAL (all furloughees), 3 NetJets, 1 Spirit, 1 charter.

As of today, USA Jet pays over guarantee on all flying done outside your assigned aircraft. i.e. a Falcon pilot doing King Air and Lear jet trips

Hi!

One opening for a TwinOtter Capt/DC-9 FO in ABQ now. Probably will be an off-the-street guy. ABQ is designed for pilots who live there.

Good Luck!

Cliff,

I've got 31 months left in the Army, but I'm doing as much research now as possible to make the final few months focused and deliberate as to where I apply and what route I take. I've seen quite a few of your posts here and over on aptap and you've caught my interest. Excellent information but like most on these forums we're always asking for more. I should be getting out with around 2200 TT /1000 FWME PC (C-12/RC-12) a wife and at least one toddler. Some of my questions are job related and some are QOL related.

1. How many days are pilots "on call" before getting a break?
2. I want to be home as much as possible when not on the clock so commuting isn't desirable. What is the area like for schools, entertainment, safety, single income housing etc.
3. What is a "typical" trip like for Cargo? Out and back, dead head to another job, hang out somewhere across the country waiting for another fare? For the pax is it drop off and leave or wait around for their business to finish and bring them home?
4. I couldn't find the jobs page on the website. What are the mins to apply and what are the competitive mins?
5. What is the interview process and would the company pay for a Frankfurt-Detroit round trip for the interview?
6. Are the employees happy in their work and dedicated to making the company better and profitable, or is it just a paycheck at the end of the day?
7. What about the flying makes the pilots want to keep coming into work?
8. Is the 25 min recall hard and fast or if you hit every red light on the way in and it takes you 40 mins is there a get out of jail free card?

Again, April 2010 when I ETS is still a ways off, but I've got a feeling it'll show up faster then I imagine. I don't want to be caught off guard and flying stateside without a job.

Thanks in advance for any answers and advice!

Brian

Hi!

If U pm me with email I'll send a lot of info:

1. On anywhere from 1 to 31 days (my max). If you're a falcon guy, it averages 9 on/5 off. -9 freighter guys avg. 8 on/6 off. The lates bid had work schedules as long as 17 days on for freighters. If you're a -9 pax guy, you'll basically be on for 6 days or less.

2. About 3/4 of the guys live near YIP (Willow Run Airport). While housing is expensive, lately it's been cheaper. The guys who live here say there's good schools for their kids, but I have heard that some school districts are better than others. The guys who live here average about 20 nights at home. In the last year, it's been over 25 nights at home.

3. There is no typical cargo trip, just airports we go to more than others. Most frequent: YIP, LRD, SHV, LIT, MCI, ELP, MMIO, CYYZ, GYY, FWA, FNT, MMHO, DAL. We also go irregularly to MIA, LAX, MDW, ATL, SAT, DFW, EWR, TEB, JFK, BOS, PHL, and about 1000 other airports. Most of our flying is in a N-S corridor between MX/TX and the Upper Mid-west/Southern Canada, which is the auto parts corridor. Less regularly we fly all over N. America. My last trip was YIP-DAL-SDF-YIP carrying a whole plane load of Blackberries for RIM.

4. Go to:
http://jsfirm.com/
to see our ads. It's 500/100 for the Falcon, and 1 year of -121/mil for the -9.

5. U can find the interview process on: http://www.aviationinterviews.com/.
The company, like most non-scheduled companies will NOT pay for the trip. They will pay for the hotel and lunch.

6. Some of the employees are happy and send emails to the CEO, which are all read and considered. Others think it's good or OK and are here for the duration. Others think it's good or OK or hate it and are looking for a better job. Still others hate everything about the company, but are staying and not looking for other jobs. I think the employee satisfaction is about the same as at most jobs, except for the top tier of jobs like FedEx/UPS/SWA/BA/Lufthansa, etc.

7. The guys that like it here are some combination of:
Relatively good pay and a flexible schedule
Lots of money (if you live in DTW and sell a lot of days off)
Like flying to a variety of places
PAX guys that like having a 6 month schedule and flying NCAA teams, Shakira, Politicians, going to the Bahamas for a week, etc.
Being home 20-25 days a month, flying 50 hours or less, and generally not working too hard

8. If you're on freight with a 25" call out, you have to be there in 25" if you're called out at short notice. Lots of guys haven't made the callout and they're still here. Guys have gotten in trouble for not making the callout. If you're a PAX guy on reserve, it's a 2 hour callout. If you're a freight guy, about 20%? of the callouts are for 25". My last trip they told me to be in Ops in 45", for a takeoff in 1'+15".

Good Luck!
