Heard at one of the job fairs that SWA was going to have mini-bases. Is this still in the works and if so where would they might be? Also while on reserve, are you allowed to pick up trips on your days off for extra pay? Looking forward to starting class next year!! Thanks guys

Mini bases is a concept that is being reviewed but nothing concrete. You can pick up anything you want on your days off. What you pick up determines your pay however. If you pick something up in give away from another pilot, it's straight pay. If you opt to either Extra Fly or pick up from daily open time, it's second year pay. If you opt to VJA or JA, it's time and a half. You never VJA (Voluntary Junior Man) your first year. Instead, opt for extra fly which pays more usually depending on what you select for your min pay before they call you. You can turn down extra fly assignments if they are junk, but not VJA or JA assignments.

The min base concept is nothing more than having trips start and end in city that is not currently a base. Rather than having a full blown base, it would have a computer to check in on and maybe a base coordinator. It would allow for guys that commute the ability to fly from home. Although not all your trips would begin or end it that city, you would still be officially based at one of the current bases.
Potentials are for possibly more productivity, better flexibility, and several cost cutting approaches such as hotels. Some feel that it is all dependent on getting electronic flight bags, but you could do it with our current brain bag setup.
