200K for an FO? That is a sh@t load of money for a 5th yr FO. How did he manage to do that? It says on the website (http://www.airlinepilotcentral.com/content/view/48/17/), that he is making 114/hr.

Just curious

It can be done with skillful manipulation of ones schedule. The trip rate for a 5th year FO is 100.43/trip(114/Hr). If he can work fo mostly VJA pay(1.5x) for most of the month, he can do it. 166 trips average and there are a few that DO THIS. Not me, I average about 110-115trips per month and rarely fly extra.

For the month of December I picked up one VJA 2 day trip and I'll get just a little over 120 trips for the month.

On a related note: when does a newhire become eligible for healthcare benefits? I stopped being interested in CAL when I learned that they don't offer health insurance for the first six months. BTW, if this is not correct about CAL, please let me know.

Thank U

If it hasn't changed in a few years, the company wide cafeteria plan has a 90 day elimination period, but the company self covers you and your family with their basic 80/20 plan from day one, and then you later transition to the cafeteria plan when you become eligible.

Default Vja

Home SliceT6--

VJA stands for Voluntary Junior Available and pays time and a half. They use this to assign trips that didn't get picked up in daily open time etc. and in lieu of JA.

Don't VJA your first year though. Any open time you pick up during your first year pays second year pay ($74.49/trip) vs. time and a half of first year pay ($66.22/trip).

Also, regarding the SWA F/O who made $200k this year it is true. I know him and he REALLY works the system. He barely has any days off but he lives in domicile. He's an older guy who must retire soon that's why he's busting ass so much. On the other extreme I have flown with captains who give away so much that their second paycheck of the month is less than $100.00. I saw one who got paid $14.00 on the 20th.

If a guys just flies his line you will get paid about 1,080 trips per year and block about 750 hours. Just multiply the trip rate of whichever year you want by 1,080 and you'll get pretty close to what the average Joe line holder makes who doesn't pick up.

Good Luck!

SB,

Thanks for the info - good advice. Hopefully see you on the line soon. Should start class in Feb.
Another quick question...Is it hard to pick up trips to get you back home instead of deadheading? I.E. Trip finishes in Oakland but you need to get home to San Antonio. Might as well get paid while commuting if at all possible.

"Works the system" = F-ing over the company and fellow co-workers. All within the weak contract language though. Loopholes which wil hopefully be closed when the next contract is done.
