birdeater,

For what it is worth, while on short call you are not required to be in position to cover all airports in your base. As long as you are in position to cover any of the airports (your choice) in a reasonable amount of time you are OK. For example many NYC pilots live in Jersey or PA about an hour (with no traffic) from Newark, but they are h#ll and gone from JFK. This is perfectly legal per the contract. Also, there is not publish time requirement for reporting; it just says able to report in a reasonable amount of time. or something like that.

This is the case in NYC.

However, per the contract, LAX pilots' "prompt availability" on short call is measured with respect to LAX only, even though they may be required to cover LAX, ONT, SNA, BUR, or LGB. (Section 23 S.10.)

Along those lines, a buddy of mine was asking me a question the other day that I didn't know the answer to. For you LAX-based guys, does Delta provide parking at all the co-terminals or just LAX? In other words, are you on the hook for parking (in addition to the gas!) if you get called out to ONT?

Steamer, SA-

Thanks guys for the insight. I scheduled my Delta interview for next week. LAX is an easy one for me to commute. birdeat

That's next to impossible from TO. But you would rather commute to SLC over LAX? You must have enough seniority to hold some sort of schedule up there. Can you commute the same day for trips?

United has the A320 in LA and I believe you cover Burbank and Long Beach. The pay is less, but the lifestyle looks better.

Thoughts for a potential new guy? birdeater

I'd go DAL and worry about covering the extra bases later. LAX is very junior right now. I'm moving the fam to Park City UT for the QOL. My next door neighbor is a UA Captain on the 777. I think he'd be thrilled with a DAL/UA merger. That speaks volumes to me.

Well, don't expect LAX to grow much more for this year (from resources). The 73n is almost fully staffed, and I don't know much about the other 2 cat, but I think they're still figuring things out, especially with the new 700 coming online soon. I'm seeing a relief pilot sitting in business class for the 737 in our near future, going to HI.
