Just remember, there is always someone in this world who has it worse. As an airline pilot you think you're gone a lot. I agree that it may be hard on family, but try being gone 60-90 days at a time, 2-3 times a year like we've been doing in the tanker world (military). And I'm not talking to Hawaii, Paris, San Diego or where ever else you would consider a good layover. I'm talking the armpit of the world, for 60+ days straight, talking to your wife 2-3 times a week on the phone for 15 minutes because there are limits to phone usage. Using emails as a poor man's "instant" messenger. It sucks, but that's the job. I'm not even including the time away from home we spend doing conus taskings in between deployments. The grass is always greener. I know mil pilots that spent almost 300 days a year away from home.
Not looking for sympathy, because again, these are the paths we choose, but like I said, someone always has it worse and despite being away from home alot, it is possible to still have a great family life, as long as the rest of your family understands and can accept what you do for a living.
