When I started reading this thread, I was motivated and everyone seemed happy, then the posts started deteriating. From becomming cynical to just plain negative. What happened?

The job is what you make it. If you stay away from the politics, the union crap, and the negatives you'll do great! If you are starting out with a new family, then no good can come from it. If you're single no cares nor any worries, then go for it. Remember... nobody wants to hear about how bad the job is. You and you alone are responsible for your own choices in life. You are an adult... you can make your own decisions in life. I chose the single path, no family... and have had greater adventures in aviation then guys with AA, DAL, NWA, UAL put together. I also don't have the Union BS they have. I don't have to carry my ALPO dog dish around. But on the other hand... I am away from home more than perhaps I would like to be. I have no regrets after 30 years in this wacky world of aviation. I am not an ALPA union koolaide drinker, and have money set aside for my retirement on my own with my own personal contract negiation. I am in control of my own career, destiny, and retirement income. You want to have fun? Follow you heart... but of course at not the expense of your loved ones... your family.

Just a short comment to take exception with your statement "stay away from the .... union crap."

DO get involved with the union crap. DO NOT let someone else set the agenda that you'll operate under. Get involved, have your say and keep up on what your union is doing; it's only your career.

Don't leave it to someone else, or you'll deserve what you ultimately get.

Look where DAL and NWA pilots are today. Even with their involvement, are the pilots better off today? If DAL and NWA elected to have an in house shop ala American, then I would agree with your statement. Yeah… ALPA or should I say ALPO continues to do perform meraculous feats for their members. I still say you want to have a good career in aviation go over seas... stay away from the uion crap.

The person above is right, neither link to the video is working anymore. We all still want to see it though; does anyone have a link? Can you have someone with the original e-mail a copy or upload it to google video?

Here, Mr. "Independent", ala captnjs , tells you that UNIONS are the problem, he's stayed away from them (good riddance) and I'm sure he'd tell you (if you ask ) that his pay and benefits are totally the result of HIS expert ability and personal negotiating ability
Here's the truth, we all are affected by the actions of each other. whether we fly freight, pax, LCC, legacy, fractional, corporate or crop dusting; we all have an affect, positive and negative on our chosen profession. If some Numbnut tells you that ALPA or any other union is not working to improve the likes of their members, he full a sh!t. WE are the union, WE vote on the contact, good or bad, and if any "non member" wants to spout about what little ALPA or any other airline union, has done for the profession, ask, "What have you done to further the cause"??
But than captnjs lives in a world where only his own needs are concerned. No family to support, no family to come home to. I wonder why he's even concerned about time off or getting home, there's no one waiting (or caring??) when he gets home.
Get a life

Hey dckozak… damn good dissertation.

By the way… what's your favorite Koolaide flavor?

The unions aren't the problem it’s the union representation… that's the problem. I have always stressed in-house associations are far better and more effective than outside disinterested third parties. But then again you must be proud of ALPA's accomplishments over the years… especially the present… DAL... pay cuts.... Great job… my hats off to the great negotiating power. Oh yes there’s NWA pay cuts and invasion of scope clause... ALPA to the rescue again!!!! stellar performances in championing the cause of pilots.

Oh by the way Slick... I have a life. Me... I pitch up for my flights... fly my trips and go home and enjoy my family and friends. The best part is my pay is deposited into my bank account, and my life, medical, disability, loss of license insurance is fully paid up too. I don't have some self serving numb nut negotiating my pay or benefits on my behalf… I do it myself. Even my physicals are paid for too. How about that? When I exercise... its not on a picket line in the cold rain or snow... its on the beach in the nice warm sun or on the golf course.

Don't worry... its OK... the flocks need sheep to follow the herd. Go for it and enjoy.

Again, I have always said that an in-house association can accomplish the same as an individual can with better success than a disinterested third party. You want action? That’s the approach to take.

By the way, if you’re concerned about the sanctity of your family… consider another carrier that will meet your family requirements and needs. There are carriers where you can be home just about every night. The other alternative is get out of aviation completely.
