Default Why won't LCC's service CVG

I saw an article a while back stating that CVG was the most expensive airport in the US. With Delta reducing their flight schedule out of CVG, just curious as to why South West, AirTran or Jetblue wouldn't try to come in...

Thoughts?

So CVG is the most EXPENSIVE airport and you're wondering why no LCCs have yet to fly there...

I think you answered your own question. LCCs are usually concerned with keeping costs down.

I think he was referring to high ticket prices, not operating expense for the airlines.

I read a while back it has to do with some agreement with the Kenton County Airport Board and Delta. Something about gates. Anyone know more?

the article I was referencing stated that they had two Delta Skymile members. One was based in ATL and the other in CVG. The person in CVG spent almost $2k more than the one in ATL. With that opportunity, I was curious as to why the LCC's wouldn't try to capture some of the market while Delta pulls back.

Because the pullbacks are in secondary low yield markets, where LCC don't operate.

Chow,

I was just at a hotel by CVG with my daughter. I flew in to SDF and drove up for the evening and than back this morning. My daughter was on a regular ticket (SWA) and the cost to get to and from PHX (and CVG) on any other carrier was too high for this cheap airline guy. My two cents is that (for SWA) it is too close to SDF but never say never. If the cost per passenger charged by the airport is reasonable anything is possible.

How far of a drive is SDF to CVG?

I guess I could see that being the reason for LUV, but not for say Jetblue or Airtran.

Southwest doesn't serve Boston either, however they do serve Manchester, NH. and Providence, RI. both 30 minutes away on a good day with no traffic.

There are lots of available gates in CVG. There are no restrictions with agreements with Delta. Sun Country and some other low cost airlines have flown there. In the end it is not a profitable market. Its never been a great hub for Delta either. It is feed dependent with limited O&D traffic.

Most people don't realize that the Cincy airport is actually in KENTUCKY!! That's also why many in Ohio don't claim Cincinnati as part of the state. SDF to CVG is about 85 miles.
