CAL Scope
#1
I hear rumor that Mgt.is offering no furloughs in exchange for scope relaxation? Pure rumor from the crew room, so we know what it's worth, but anybody else hearing that. Utterly rediculous. If they can offer no furlough for anything....it tells you, really no need to furlough. And this.....from the folks that can't figure out fuel hedging. LOL I haven't seen or heard the facts on that either, but did they really try to hedge at 140 a barrel?
Any now...fuel price retreating a little isn't necessarily a good thing???
Man, I got to start keeping up with things. I endeavour to tune out this business on days off....but I seem to be missing some good stuff.

True, they must not need to furlough. Why would you need scope relief? Answer: to give flying away. If you give flying away, then one would think that they would furlough more rather than less, since there's less need for pilots.
Coming from experience, just say no.

Yes, the company met with the union concerning the scope section. Specific issues revolved around revenue enhancement and antitrust hurdles with our pals at United (of course related to the Star Alliance plans). DAL and NWA already ironed those topics out, which is allowing them to move forward. Under our current CBA, we have reached a stalemate. In order to proceed, CAL needs relaxation on these issues. Of course, we need things in exchange. It has been explained to me that the MEC found the terms unacceptable, as issues this large warrant far more being given in return for CALALPA flexibility. There are a lot of things left to be desired about our current contract (putting it mildly) but if they haven't caved on scope yet, hopefully that will remain the status quo. We have seen firsthand (and I'm sure they'd agree) what larger RJ's have done to the other legacy carriers.
Regarding the fuel hedging, also partially correct. SOME portion of our fuel contracts are currently hedged higher than what oil is trading at RIGHT NOW. Without putting specific numbers and being off, I'll point you to the last quarterly report where you can get precise info on the hedging strategy for the remainder of this year. It is too soon to tell whether or not they will prove to be futile. Both UAL and CAL lost many millions a few years ago on betting incorrectly against oil.
System bid is out..... enjoy making heads or tails of that - and let me know when you do.

As someone being furloughed, DO NOT RELAX SCOPE. I can find a different job. While I am as happy as one can be at the bottom of the seniority list at cal, there are other jobs out there. I like how they tell us how we should be happy that we just have a job. The sky is falling, the world is ending, plague, death and famine, thank God I have a job at cal.
