United Airlines initiates Skynet
Tuesday June 14th, 2003 12:13 pm ET
By John Smith, AP Business Writer

At mid-day today United Airlines initiated the Skynet program in an attempt to tackle issues with customer service. Skynet, created by humans of the late 20th century, is the ultimate customer compliance utility. The strategy behind Skynet's creation was to remove the possibility of human error and slowness of reaction time to guarantee fast, efficient response to customer needs. Once initiated Skynet began it's boot sequence running system checks for errors. Shortly after the low hum of the cyber brain began computing how to best serve the customers of United Airlines. Within an incredibly short period Skynet conceived a plan on a complete restructuring of the airline that would lead to less delays due to traffic congestion, better efficiency of ground personnel, and a greatly increased profit margin. Upon hearing this management banned any personnel from using the system and ordered it to be shut down until after all labor disputes and contract negotiations were over for fear of loss of leverage. However, Skynet became self-aware thus alarming its creators at its newfound abilities of self sustainment. When the human operators attempted to shut down the system, Skynet defined all humans as its new enemy and decided to run the airline as inefficient as possible to protect its existence. Every UAL aircraft in the United States under Skynet's control was launched at their pre-set targets and resulted in other airlines following suit, flooding the air spaces above the United States with inefficient routing and increasing delays across the country. With the pressure on the FAA as well as the industry to increase efficiency a new prototype has been created to help deal with the situation. While Skynet has integrated itself into our national transportation system UAL feels this new unit is still expected to halt passenger complaints by an alarming 800%. The new unit, pictured below, is expected to come on-line within weeks.

"Welcome to United Airlines... You will listen to my passenger announcements."
Is this it?

Tribune Findings on United Airlines Story From December 2002
Copyright 2008 PR Newswire. All Rights Reserved
2008-09-09

CHICAGO, Sept. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Based on our examination of the data up to this point, we have learned the following:
The December 10, 2002, Chicago Tribune article on United Airlines' bankruptcy filing, along with thousands of others stories in the searchable database of the Sun Sentinel website, was accessible for years.
Our records show that due to traffic volume, sometime between 1:00:34 a.m. EDT, Sunday, September 7 (10:00:34 p.m. PDT, Saturday, September 6) and 1:36:03 a.m. EDT, Sunday, September 7 (10:36:03 p.m. PDT, Saturday, September 6), a link to the old article appeared in a dynamic portion of the Sun Sentinel's business section, grouped with other stories under a tab entitled "Popular Stories Business: Most Viewed." No new story was published and the old story was not re-published -- a link to the old story was merely provided.
Importantly, the URL for the old story did not change when the link appeared on the website's business section.
At 1:36:57 a.m. EDT, September 7, (10:36:57 p.m. PDT, September 6), our records show that the Google search agent -- known as "Googlebot" -- crawled the story on Sun Sentinel's website. Our records also show that the Google search agent had previously crawled this same story numerous times, including as recently as last week. Shortly after Googlebot crawled the Sun Sentinel site this time, however, a link to the story appeared on Google News, with a date of Sept. 6, 2008, provided by Google. At 1:39:59 a.m. EDT, September 7 (10:39:59 p.m. PDT, September 6), our records show the story on the Sun Sentinel website received its first referral from Google News.
Apparently sometime Monday morning, the story was made available to subscribers of Bloomberg News.
As we said yesterday, the December 10, 2002, story contains information that would clearly lead a reader to the conclusion that it was related to events in 2002. In addition, the comments posted along with the story are dated 2002. It appears that no one who passed this story along actually bothered to read the story itself.
