Question about UAL "Channel 9"
Hello,
Had a quick question regarding UALs policy on enabling the COM1 radio on the in-flight entertainment system as channel 9.
As stated by the crew, this is only enabled at the pilots discretion. But I'm curious, why would a CA turn this off? If PAX are asking for it, what would be the rationale to not do this?
Thanks.

Abnormal situations would also cause me to turn it off (no I don't work for United, just putting myself in their shoes). If I'm declaring min fuel or anything that should be a non-event but would cause panic in the back (WHAT, WE'RE GONNA RUN OUT OF FUEL!?!?!?!?!), I think I'd throw the switch.

I agree with Emb170man. If there was ever an emergency (or something like minimum fuel, etc...), they can and should disable channel 9.
I think what the first poster was referring to was captains who never turn on channel 9. Like they feel it will aid terrorists if they wanted to take over the aircraft or something . Channel 9 is unique to United and lots of people really like it. Just walk down the aisle of a United flight and see for yourself. Especially during takeoff, final approach, and landing. Everyone from aviation enthusiasts to the frequent business travelers (they people who pay lots of money for their ticket) likes channel 9.
Keep it on unless you have a good reason to turn it off (like what Emb170man said).

I had a "seasoned citizen" ask if we were drinking up there (jokingly) because he'd heard us report in with "Whiskey".
Then there was the lawyer hooking up a tape recorder "just in case" something happened.
