FL 350, Get a 4-year degree in something (assuming you haven't already). While you're doing that, take some flying lessons. I think you'll know pretty quickly if you have sufficient interest to move on from there. If flying is truly your calling, it's kind of an irresistable force. Whether you make a career of it or just a hobby, you'll learn things about yourself and the world you live in that you probably couldn't discover in any other way.

Fly
I know that many of you feel that I am a total aviation brasher, and I am here to assure you that it isn't true. There are those of us who are truly useless in any other profession and probably shouldn't be breeding anyway, those people belong as pilots. Some are born without the natural desire for self preservation or self respect they too should become pilots. And there are a tiny few who are so socially inept that they need a captive group of coworkers in order to have anyone to talk to and they should become pilots. Occasionally there is a rare breed of man that encompasses all of the above and that person is...
I hope you guys realize that though I mean every word sometimes I am trying to be a little funny at times.

You could also give crack a try. If you like it and it too becomes an irresistible force then perhaps you could become a dealer. Though recreational drug use is satisfying as well the good news is that either path will most likely kill you in the end. Aviation however most often leaves its addicts lucid, impoverished, emotionally bankrupt, totally void of self esteem and very much alive to live down their mistakes for the rest of their days.

cargo hopeful: I could be misled, but my impression after 22 years at large regionals/majors is that African-Americans (and other minorities) in the cockpit are treated with respect. As far as I know, you will be judged by your qualifications and professionalism. I hope you will find that is the case!
I'm not sure what the statistics are industry-wide, but I would guess that only about 2-3% of the pilots at airlines I have worked for are from minority groups.
