No sense in poking the gorilla with a stick.

Jinx: The superstition is sometimes used when talking about a future event with too much confidence. A statement like "We're sure to win the contest!" can be seen as a jinx by tempting fate. After such a statement, failure would be ironic. For the human mind, the irony makes it all the more likely. This therefore brings bad luck: it is a "jinx". The event itself is referred to as "jinxed".

I remember sitting in class on September 6, 2001 and we had a guest speaker from the local FSDO. He stated how well of a job the FAA had been doing fighting hijackings in the United States. He was definitely tooting his own horn about the superb job he and his organization had done to keep us safe. Keep in mind that was Thursday, 9/6/2001. Remember what happened that next Tuesday? Kind of ironic I thought!
