There are far stronger economic forces than just a noble "you and me" type of a deal. Just picture a pilot with 3 kids and a mortgage who is being threatened with many years of unemployment vs him keeping a job but taking a draconian pay cut in order for the airline to remain competive.
By the same token, history repeats itself and in 2000 UAL got a 28% raise to well over 200/hr to fly that Airbus 320. Delta followed with United + 1%, and SWA got in on the action with their 2003 wage adjustment to almost those levels. UAL and DAL have since plunged but SWA is still up there and thus a target has been set for CAL and AMR who are in section 6 and UAL who soon will be. Remember the "permanent" b-scales at AMR in the mid 80's? It took 5 years to break 30K. The scabbed out substandard wages at CAL in the 80's? One could have easily said "just accept it". I am glad they didn't. The contracts in 2000 were the most lucrative in history....We will see what the future holds.

I think this response reeks much more of 'cool aide' than his intelligent summary of how supply and demand is affecting the airline industry.

As much disdain as I have for intraweb bickering, and as much as I believe in free market economics. I still believe that we, ("you and me"), control the supply side of the equation.

Noble, perhaps...

The Coporal is right in many respects. Wrong in others, as most of us are

BTW, I am the guy with three kids and a mortgage ...
