Notsofast -

I got bumped from a United 777 from FRA to ORD once. It was due to unusually heavy cargo. No non-revs, including a United pilot with his two kids, got on. Everybody had to get on a flight to IAD even though that ORD flight had open seats.

Just to illustrate that on a flight that is not even close to max-range for something, cargo can be the monkey-wrench that is thrown into the non-rev scene.

NotsoFast,

To echo the post from iaflyer, no non-revs got on this flight including what appears to be a family of 5. Clearly the flight was payload optimized. I did some research on Jumpseaters on Payload restricted flights because I thought we had recently been assured that JSers would not be removed. According to the Flt Ops memo in AUG of 2008, only Delta pilots and F/As who have made an advance reservation via the JS phone system are guaranteed a seat in the case of payload optimization. OAL jumpseaters are never allowed when the flight is payload restricted (neither are Delta pilots if they try to 'walk-up' without an advance reservation).

I'm sorry it didn't work out for you, but I don't think anyone was trying to screw you. It looks like the Load planner and/or the gate agent was playing it straight by the book. My guess is the Captain probably had no say in the Non Rev/JS decision.

Well I learned from not just DL that any airline going to places like south and central america usually have weight issues. NRSA out of Bogota when theres been a 767 I have learned that Bananas and coffee are more important than a nonrev. Especially if you check a bag, they will onload a norev with just carry-ons before one who checks bags when on a weight restriction. I learned that planning on what aircraft is flying back to the US is important, usually can get lucky to get on with a 738 or 757. I dont know but your folgers in the morning makes more money than us getting on back home. DL is usually pretty good about helping Nonrev's of course thats if youre not in a contract station then youre almost SOL. I fly alot to PTY and these guys are contract and dont seem to know much from their left or right, much less what a weight restriction is. If youre able to talk to the Captain most times the old school guys are able to find you a space on board and get you home.

When going to PTY I always buy a ZED with CM or AV out of BOG to make sure I have a way home. The price to pay for flying free... well almost free...

happy nonreving.....

He acknowledges "your" point, his real point, as I read it, was not even a courtesy message passed to his wife when the Capt knew their story!

The explanations are valid, however, I think what you are looking for is confirmation it sucked and we're sorry.

Sir, it sucked. We are sorry.

(I learned this trick in dealing with my wife, she doesn't want the problem fixed, since there is nothing can be done about it. She wants to hear, "it sucks, I'm sorry." Then she buys shoes and does the chick thing. She's good looking, I'm f'ugly, we're both happy.)

My wife has her own cell phone and I'm able to call her from my cell phone and leave messages for her to retrieve when she turns it on.

Anybody know what happens on Feb. 14th??? Yup, lots of flowers coming from South America right now. Payload optimized by a bunch of roses...sorry.

That's interesting. Your telling me the Captain's at Delta have no say so regarding increasing burn or taking a half weight counts or other forms of payload reduction?

I've never left people behind for weight, (at least not on the 757/767), and trust me I've been the one telling them, (load planning) who would or wouldn't get on the aircraft.
