all i know is, they took over my schools training program, i dropped out because of it and flew on the side. it costs an arm and leg for training, i had friends that taught there and they said they gave each instructor a ridiclously low # of students so they only got 12 hours a week in the winter so that 1000 hours took 2 years to get to. and they FORBID you from having an outside job so you better still live with your parents.
but thats what i heard from friends, not what i went thru.

NO academy gets job for its graduates, what gave you that idea? They promise an interview which means absolutely nothing. Plus last time I checked Skywest doesn't hire many low timers and Comair is not hiring at all so where are these dca graduates going? They just started a partnership with Eagle that's how desperate they are. There is a reason why every major academy has partnership with Eagle, I don't think you would want to find out the reason.

If anything DCA is too expensive for the value. You have to pay like 100 bucks for an hour with a 152??? +instructor. The total comes out to be like 60k and that's just for your ratings, then you have to instruct. I hear that since they have an obligation to the students to offer CFI positions, when there aren't CFI spots avialable for students they basically furlough the students untill there is a spot open for them, and it could take months and some times a year untill a spot opens up. My advice would be to go through your local FBO.

Much more satisfaction and a less chance of disappointment.

Do not know first hand about that. BUT!!! Where are these new guys going to go? Get your rating outside at the FBO and go back to college and get a degree that will make some money for you if this flying gig does not work out for you. Stay away from DCA and Mesa to for these guys really take you to the bank when it comes to training and job offer. Good Luck!

best decision i made was to go to small FBO's for training... do it on your schedule, because honestly, there are some days you just dont want to fly, or dont have time to... also, much cheaper and you can work and stuff on the side, not to mention meet other people at the FBO's who own planes and may offer up some time to you..

I wish I knew about a website like this before I got suckered into DCA. At the time I was weighing my options, they were promising from zero time to flying as a paid flight instructor in ten months (knowing it would probably closer to a year). Then you spend a year as a flight instructor then its off to the airlines, and on your way to a glorious career. All that it would cost you is about $50K.
REALITY: I went there with my PVT already, only had to do Instrument, Commercial, Multi, CFI and II. Thinking to myself that it should take about 10 months to complete that. After 13 months and only just finishing CFI ground school, I left. I also observed many flight instructors that were there before I arrived were there while I was supposed to be trying to get a job with them. Average time as an instructor there is about 2 years. Oh, by the way, they don’t include MEI in the pricing, as you don’t get that for about a year and a half after you become an instructor. Total cost that I ended up with for Commercial ASEL/MEL Inst: $72K. There aren’t enough planes for the students. I had so many cancellations due to lack of aircraft.
What hatetobreakit2u said about outside jobs. He’s right, but they don’t forbid you to. Their scheduling is such that you as an instructor or a student cannot have an outside job. They don’t post the schedule for the next day until 5pm the night before. Then you don’t fight out what aircraft you’re flying (flight planning purposes would be nice) until that day. What employer would hire you under those circumstances? Oh, all this for a lousy $10 per flight hour. All ground instruction is unpaid to the pilots, yet they are required to give it.
They do promise job interviews, but that’s all. Its up to you to get the job.

The whole guaranteed interview thing is the biggest scam in this day and age. By the time a DCA guy "graduates", and thus gets the guaranteed interview, he's got the times for an interview already. What a joke...

That is exactly right. They don't sit down with you and start to teach you write up a resume until you have 1200 hours, then you have to wait until 1500 hours before you are considered "graduated". When I was leaving most of the people that were going anywhere was going to Republic to fly the 145's. Why wait when at that time Express Jet was hiring for the same aircraft with less than half the time required?
