Hudson autoland flight 1549
#21
One thing I have found most interesting in what the crew did that day was not how they landed but the decision to land where they did. I personally think that is where their experience showed, not necessarily being able to hold wings level and nose up at touch down.
I have often thought about that exact same situation out of 100 pilots how many of them would have decided to touch down in the hudson as opposed to doing whatever it takes to make one of the 3 nearby runways.
I think they made the right choice (obviously) as an attempt at any runway even if remotely unsuccessful would have been catastrophic with many losses of life.
Just food for thought as I am not sure my experience level would have told me in the heat of battle to put it down in the hudson, I may have tried TEB and we can all guess how that would have turned out.

There are some swamp like areas over in that direction but that would have made it very hard for rescue crews to have reached the wreckage.
Bottom line is he did a fantastic job imho.

If in fact they were normal law and alpha protection did not attempt to kick in....it was due to superior pilotage!!!
There is no Hudson river landing switch the hit to magically ditch the aircraft. That were flying the aircraft.....period! If it was an old Boeing, the stick shaker would have alerted the to impending stall just like alpha prot would have tried to prevent a stall. Had they been in alpha prot at contact, I doubt the outcome would have been the same due to an increased deck angle.
Do not confuse the system with the fact they were flying. it is like saying that on an aircraft that you trim off stick pressure that the aircraft is doing the flying. True to an extent but it was the pilot using the resources available to make it happen

Enough of this hero crap.
Sully got lucky after a highly questionable decision.
If grandma in a wheelchair could not have made it
out of the wreck in time the news coverage would be
different and he would face the courts.
From the point of dual flameout – or the point from
where Sully took the controls away from his F/O to
touchdown the A320 flew 12 NM.
It is only 7 NM back to LGA!
He made the ‘heroic’ decision not to endanger people on
the ground instead of thinking of his passengers and
crew first?
And then he forgets to hit the ‘Ditching Switch’.
The A320 flies easy because of the auto trim feature,
and green dot will let you glide at best speed.
