Yeah, there is no grounds for a lawsuit here. They did not lose the kid, so unless he was on his way to a heart transplant, a refund is about as far as it would go.
We have grown adults get on the wrong flight on a regular basis (due the confusing layout of our commuter terminal). They usually tune out all the announcements until the one that says "We are beginning our gradual descent into ABQ..." and then throw a fit because they wanted to go to SFO. Although one guy was smart enough to figure it out in cruise because the sun was on the wrong side of the airplane.
I also diverted once on a stormy night in New England...with a UM, to a town where we did not have ground handling. That one was touchy...we didn't want to leave the kid alone in his own room, and we didn't want him spending the night alone with a grown man. We got a room with two beds and a cot. The CA and FA slept in the beds and the kid slept on the cot

A few years ago I was flying from a south Florida airport to Rochester, NY. About half way there, an old couple complained to the Flight Attendent that they were supposed to go to Rochester, Minnesota to the Mayo Clinic. I checked their ticket (this was when we still had printed paper tickets) and sure enough the ticket spelled out Rochester, Minnesota, but the flight number that we were on. Interesting, because my airline did not even fly to Rochester, Minnesota.

Hey Eric,
CAL screwed up.............but your pot shot welcomes the response, "so Eric, what airline do you work for that has NEVER screwed up, becaused I'd love to send my congratulations to you and your co-workers for having the "perfect airline"? I'm sure you won't post who you work for (I have my notion that you probably don't work for anyone because you REFUSE to let us know. Please Eric, put us out of our misery, just WHO DO YOU WORK FOR? Simple question, simple answer. I'm sure you'll refuse as always.............

When have I ever said that my airline "never" screws up? Let me even answer it for you. I've never said anything remotely close to that. Here is an example of my airlines screw up the other day. My airline allowed a passenger to board a flight to the wrong airport. Oops... It was a mistake that shouldn't happen but does. Hell even a buddy of mine boarded a wrong flight home to DC. He realized it on the last announcement and didn't get off because he was in uniform. He just called his wife and said to pick him up at dulles instead of national. Guess which airline he works for.

You are correct about one thing. I'm not gonna tell you who I work for except that it is an airline. There is no reason why it would even matter in this discussion.

I know that kids get passed back and forth between divorced parents and the logistics aren't always easy..
But personally I would never place my 10 year old child on a plane by themselves.. especially if I knew there was a connection they had to make.
I realize some kids are pretty sharp, but an airport can be an intimidating place that is full of complete strangers.
If little Billy's safety is so important to the parents, they should be there to chaperon him from A to B... or is he not worth the price of a round trip ticket?

we had a 5 year old UM from Accra to JFK the other day. Poor girl was so shy and scared half to death. Our FAs took real good care of her, mostly because they are Grandmothers themselves. :-)

I used to contemplate putting my kids as UM's, that was until a psychiatrist told me how many kids they treat who were molested while flying as UM over the years. The number was uh...shocking. Guess its just not well publicized.
