Default AMR Still Shrinking

We once had over 810 aircraft - we're now down to 593 and still shrinking. 80s are being parked faster than 73s coming online. We also have the longest time to upgrade of any legacy carrier and upgrades are getting longer. Latest Captain upgrade was a '92 hire. And we also have more guys over the age of 60 than under the age of 40 - this while furloughing. And we still have the BA/Iberia AI to look foward to. Not the career most of us had hoped for I'm afraid - very much a job these days..

Look on the bright side--you still have all of those TWA pilots out on furlough for you.

You said it, more over 60. In a few years your training department could get a bit busy.

Seems like I remember hearing that American had a way to force senior FO's to upgrade...is that true or did I get some bad info?

I think you have to upgrade very shortly after your number comes up. Not sure why, though..some people like money, some like QOL. Why not let then make up their own minds.

Does anyone have similar numbers for other legacy airlines? I thought that UAL was even bigger than American at one point.

I'd love to see a graph of mainline airplanes plotted versus the year, alongside another line showing the # of regional jets flying each year. It would look like a huge "X." Of course, a graph of pilot pay would look like "\" but management pay would be a nice "/"

You are talking about the "Captain clock." It has sine been done away with. Basically, when your # came up for upgrade, you had to upgrade within, I believe, 2 years. It was AA's way of getting around age discrimination by not hiring anyone old enough to NOT make CA.
